The Headstone

I put a nightlight on it
Even though I know you're not there.
It helps me to feel a bit better
Knowing I have to leave you out there.

The cold stone warms a little
With the little light that shines,
Declaring to all who drive by
One is here, yet one is now gone.

I put a bench on it, to
visit you and such.
To tell you about
the day, to tell you
about what is going on.

I put your picture on it, so
Someday people would look and
see, how handsome you were
and how really short our lives can be.

I put things that you loved on it,
etched for eternity.
Your Mom and Dad,
Your bus and of course, me.

It doesn't make up for
you not being here, it
doesn't make up for the loss.
It doesn't take the pain away.
It just helps me to feel better
Knowing I have to leave you out there.
