Close At Hand

Do you have the proper tools? How many times have you tried to hammer a nail with a handle of a screw driver, the side of a set of pliers, or even the heel of a shoe? Necessity is the mother of invention; but some tools are irreplaceable. The hammer easily and firmly drives a nail in the wall. Substitutes lead to frustration and bent nails, and often cause needless injuries. Your thumb can not tell the difference between household tools. Each cause excruciating pain when the hand is not quicker than the tool.

We have a tendency to ignore the call of God; because we feel inadequate. We make the excuse that we don't have the proper gifts or tools for the job. We might falsely assume only those with Bible College, university or seminary degrees are equipped for ministry. Sometimes all that we need is easily accessible. Moses tried desperately to squirm out of God's mission to deliver the Israelites from Egypt. "Then Moses answered and said, But suppose they will not believe me or listen to my voice; suppose they say, The Lord has not appeared to you (Exodus 4:1 NKJ)." Any good doctor would quickly diagnose a classic case of "what-if-itis." God holds the cure. "So the Lord said to him, What is that in your hand (Exodus 2a NKJ)?" He wanted Moses to take a quick inventory. "He said, A rod (Exodus 2b NKJ)." Following God's instructions the walking stick became a serpent to be used as a sign of God's power. In future meetings with Pharaoh and the Hebrews Moses would often display the power of Jehovah, and his given authority through the rod. Is God asking us what we have close at hand?
