If Walls Could Talk

by Rebecca O'Connor
1/13/2010 / Poetry

Covered layers of paper and paint speaking of eras gone by
Lines of measuring children, showing how they have grown high
Wall to wall of home's abode and the space between we live
The comfort there casts out despair for warmth and safety give

Cherished moments spent within is much more than a house
Nor wood and plaster, caulk and nail even little mouse
The smells of seasons welcomed in to dwell and richly bless
How much love was given there; its work was effortless

When all was done and sleep begun did they discuss the day?
If walls could talk might they envision things all the same way?
Do they, for instance, know how they would settle every matter,
From viewing all the day's events with all the noise and clatter?

They never chide nor let in wind along with winter's chill
There's no rebuke in troubled times as sometimes people will
Such trust within them we must have to close our eyes and sleep
With gentle dreams and quietness our trust in thee we keep

Could this be what my Savior feels to dwell within my heart?
Is He at home in comfort there to stay and never part?
Does He repair the damage there from cracks and breaks and grief?
Wiping sorrow from its walls and bringing sweet relief

If walls could talk what would mine say, only Jesus knows
Asking Him to live within these walls is what I chose
So richly does He dwell within this place I call His home
And as He dwells within these walls, I'll never be alone.

He never chides nor lets in wind along with winter's chill
There's no rebuke in troubled times as sometimes people will
Such trust in Him we must have to close our eyes and sleep
With gentle dreams and quietness our trust in Thee we keep
