Fixing Broken Nets

by Jerry Ousley
1/23/2010 / Christian Living

I had a problem. I desperately needed to get some information from the internet but no matter what I tried I couldn't log on. I called my internet service and spent nearly forty-five minutes going through all the checks and so forth (I had actually done this on my own prior to calling them, but there is just no way you can convince them that you know what you are doing).

I couldn't figure it out and neither could they. After hanging up the phone I started checking again. I unplugged and replugged all the wires in the router box and on the modem; I checked the software settings again, reset them to the default settings (because I couldn't remember all the changes I had made) and still nothing worked. This was ludicrous! Guess what I found the problem. You see, on my system I have phone wires running all over the house, upstairs and downstairs. Not being a wealthy guy I had to improvise a bit and have several connectors incorporated in the line structure. Right underneath my desk was the most obvious one. When I checked it I found that it was slightly unplugged. Reconnecting the wire took care of the whole problem. I had a broken net(work)!

In Matthew 4 we read of another net problem. While the folks of Jesus' day didn't have the wildest idea of what the internet was or would become they did have nets of their own. Peter, James, and John were fishermen. They dealt with nets each and every day of their lives. These nets were their livelihood. They had made their living fishing and the nets were a vital part of their income.

Nets get broken. Sometimes it just occurs from wear and tear, other times they got caught on a snag, and if they had experienced a very good day, they may have been broken because they had a very large catch and the nets were strained from the weight of the fish.

Regardless how the nets were broken one thing was consistent They had to be fixed. Before they could go out for the next day's catch nets had to be mended. It was a toilsome, thankless job, but it had to be done. Not just anyone could fix those nets. It had to be someone who knew what they were doing. It took skill to mend those nets so that they wouldn't soon break again. If they weren't fixed correctly it could mean the loss of a catch.

Fixing the nets also required patience. It was a very tedious task to go over the entire net checking to make sure all the weak areas were fixed and maintained. It took time, precious time. These fishermen had spent long, hard hours out on the sea to take in their catch. They were tired and needed rest. They also still had to get the fish to market. Going over their nets and repairing them added to their schedule and took away from leisure and rest.

It also required hope. They had to put their trust in their work. They hoped they had done a good job. But they didn't have time to dwell on it long, so they did their work and hoped they had done it well.

Life is much like that. Often we find ourselves with broken nets. When it comes to life-nets we can't just go out and get a new one. It must be mended. Many things can break our life-nets. Sometimes it is caused by us, but it can be caused by other people and relationships. Other times it is just the results of years of wear and tear. Regardless how our life-nets have been broken, they must be mended if we are to ever have our lives in order. Just like in mending fishing nets, life-nets must be fixed with skill, patience and hope. We find our skill in the word of God. The answer to fixing our life-nets is there, but we must know what it says and what we are doing. It takes time. It may not happen in an instant or overnight. As we mend our life-nets with patience we will be rewarded.

Finally, fixing life-nets requires hope. Our hope, once again, is in the word of God. It tells us that once we have fixed our nets that we have the promise of a future a life with God and a home for eternity. We have no proof other than what the Bible says and what God has instilled in our hearts. But if we believe these things we can have hope.

Do you have hope? Fix your life-net with skill and patience, and hope will come. You can rest assured that your net will be ready when the next big catch comes.
