Have you ever attended a surprise party given in your honor? One time the surprise back fired. My ladies Sunday School class planned a surprise baby shower for me. They invited me, saying it would be a class gathering. I told them I could not attend; so they were forced to re-schedule. I felt pretty bad when I learned the real story. We are flattered when we are given special recognition at a party.
The Bible tells of an invitation extended by a queen, and accepted by her enemy. In arrogance he brags about being on her guest list. "And he told them about how wealthy he was and how many sons he had. He also told them about all the ways the king had honored him. And he told them how the king had placed him higher than his important men and his royal officers. And that's not all, Haman added. I'm the only person Queen Esther invited to come with the king to the banquet she gave. And tomorrow also the queen has asked me to be her guest with the king (Esther 5:11-12 NCV)." Pride lifted his heart. What goes up must come down. His wicked schemes to execute the Jews were exposed by Queen Esther; and Haman found judgment swinging from the gallows. The party's over.
