Hands

I have a problem that is common to a lot of people; I talk with my hands. It seems that I can hardly communicate without moving my hands, as if it enhances what I'm saying. I suppose it does in a way. The motions of the hands can serve like the pitch of one's voice to emphasis the point a person is making.

I like to keep my hands clean. Of course we all get dirty when we work with our hands; it can't be helped. But I just can't stand to have something sticky or gooey on them. Debbie teases me about it sometimes. But when I get something like that on my hands I've got to wash them off. After all, how can I talk with my hands if they're stuck to my shirt?

What would we do without our hands? Some have had to find out. I know a lady who has arthritis so severely that when she types on a keyboard she has a special device that she wears that allows her to one finger type. It's doing it the hard way, but improvising like this she is allowed to communicate by email which she dearly loves.

We work with our hands, play using our hands, greet each other with our hands (via a hand shake or waving "hi") and on and on the list goes. Our hands are pretty important.

In Luke 24:39 Jesus said, "Behold my hands," or in other words, "Look at my hands." The hands of Jesus are very important to us. Our Lord used His hands to bring healing to others, to bring reassurance to those in need, and they were the hands stretched out on the cross of Calvary to bring us salvation.

His healing hand is demonstrated all through the Gospels. He brought sight to the blind, cleansing to the leper, strong legs to the crippled and even raised the dead back to life. But his healing hand brings so much more. Our Lord wants to meet our physical needs; but too many times we concentrate on our physical well-being and completely forget about our spiritual well-being. Of course we think more clearly when we are physically well and I believe that God wants to bring that to us. The eternal condition of our soul is so much more important. Jesus wants to extend His hands of healing to your soul right now. If you don't know Christ as Savior you can this very moment. But if you do, then our Lord wants to continue that work which He began in you. Start receiving that now.

Then we see power in His hands. His hands are strong. In them we are kept safe. John told us that Jesus said that we are His sheep and no one can snatch us from His hands. That is assurance we can get nowhere else. People we love will do all they can to keep us safe. We can buy insurance protection, pass laws, and put locks on our doors and windows all in effort to keep us safe. But none of those are complete guarantees. Only in Christ do we have a completely reliable guarantee that we are safe. Our soul can never be taken from His strong hands.

His hands are tender. As busy as Jesus was, when mothers began to bring their children to Him, the disciples turned them away. Christ had more important things to do. But in the midst of His busyness Jesus told them not to refuse the small children. He took them in His arms and blessed them. And we are His children. The God of the universe hears the prayers of multitudes every day. He has the burden of keeping the sun in its place, the planets all rotating in their order. There is much to see too. But He always has His hands of tenderness outstretched to us His children. I'm glad for that.

His hands were those of suffering. Our God allowed men to stretch His hands over a rough cut cross beam, then nail them with large spikes into the wood. He suffered agony that most of us will never know, all because He wanted to bring healing to our souls, the guarantee that we would be held strong in His hands and He could hold them out tenderly to us. Folks, let's not take that lightly.

Finally, after all is said and done, He extends His hands of reassurance. We can know beyond a shadow of a doubt that we are in the hands of a strong, healing, tender Father and that's good to know. Do you know Him today? Have you placed yourself in those hands? If not you can. Turn to Him now even now His hands are stretched out waiting to welcome you.
