Loving What God Loves

by Jerry Ousley
2/20/2010 / Christian Living

Each of us, as individuals, has many things and many people we love. To us, there are varying degrees of love. For instance, we have a romantic love for our spouse. We have a love for our children, for our relatives, for our friends, for our pets, and for things we possess and things we like to do. To say that we love someone must really be defined by the degree of our love and so it is with the things we love. Some love to collect various items and they have a desire and a love for their hobby while others couldn't care less.

Of course I love my family deeply, my wife and my children, my brothers and sister, mother and father and yes, my in-laws. But there are also things I love to do. I love to set in front of a computer. I've talked with many people to whom this has become a necessary task due to our technological world today. They do it because they have to in their jobs and so forth. But they don't like it. In fact, I've spoken to many who actually hate it. But me I love it. My job requires me to sit in front of my computer sometimes ten hours a day. But I love it. The ministry God has allowed me to do would not exist without computers and the internet but I love it.

There are foods I dearly love. Sitting down in front of a table of delectable works of culinary art makes my heart happy. If I were going to list the foods I love it would probably take all day and it would be easier to tell you what I don't love. Of course, this is what keeps me in the condition they talk so much about on TV today and that's over-eating and obesity. I'm not terribly obese but enough that when I do go to the doctor he frowns at me. But I love it.

There are also many things that God loves. I would venture to say that there are so many things God loves that to name them all I would need the air time of seven days, twenty-four hours each day. I don't have that and even then I'd probably leave something out so I'm not even going to attempt the task. But there are a few things and people specifically named that God loves and I'd like to share some of those with you.

God loves a cheerful giver (2 Corinthians 9:6). This isn't just someone giving of their hard earned cash, but giving is done in many ways. In Deuteronomy 15:40-11 we are told that God loves the poor. In Psalm 72:12-13 we are told that God loves the weak, needy and those afflicted. And James 1:27 tells us that God loves the widows and the orphans.

We also know that God loves the worship of His people, the animals He has created and on and on the list goes. Nowhere are we told that God loves computers, but then, He doesn't have much regard for the inventions of man. He does love humanity and His creation.

The Bible talks a lot about the love of God but two particular verses of Scripture (1 John 4:8 and 4:16) tell us that God is love. It doesn't mean that love is a form of God or that God is merely an inanimate representation of love, but that His love is so strong, so pure, and so true that to really know love we must know God.

It seems to me that we need to study the love of God and begin to love what God loves. If He loves people, especially those who have found themselves in unfortunate circumstances, and His creation, then we would benefit greatly in loving those people and God's creation too. But to really love we must act. So, are we acting in the love of God? What we do for others, is it just going through the motions so as to have a big tax write-off at the end of the year, or are we helping others because we love them, just like God loves them?
