Forgive, An Action Verb

by Nancy Quinn
3/20/2010 / Devotionals

"Oh no, now what did she do?" asked Mandy. Julie sighed and gave a detailed account of her emotionally exhausting morning. The lunchtime crowd in the diner easily drowned out the commiserations of the two friends. They were allies against a single office foe; a foe so cunning and vindictive that it would take up their entire lunch hour to regain the courage to face the long afternoon back in their world of cubicles. A petite blonde with long hair and seemingly longer nails, Jacqueline worked hard at figuring out how to avoid her office responsibilities. And it seemed she worked even harder at spreading office gossip and trying to get her co-workers in trouble with the boss.

Forgive. There is no other word in the English language that is such a seemingly simple word, yet it often becomes close to impossible to accomplish, even for Christians at times. And some Christians even allow their righteous indignation to burn against the offending party so that an unforgiving spirit burrows into their heart so deeply that it allows the devil a foothold in their lives.

Matthew 18:21-22 "Then Peter came and said to Him, "Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me and I forgive him? Up to seven times?" Jesus said to him, "I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven."

Work, school, community, and yes, even church; any place we humans inhabit has the potential for the need to use that action verb called "Forgiveness". From minor infractions where feelings are hurt, to major infractions where someone purposely tries to hurt you become perfect opportunities to shine the light of Christ into a dark world.

Jesus gave us the ultimate example of forgiveness when he created an eternal, life-saving bridge to God with a wooden cross long ago. And with it came the opportunity for God to forgive us for our sins if we merely admit our need for forgiveness and accept Jesus as our Savior. But because he forgives us of our sins and gives us a new life, He expects us to forgive others as we have been forgiven as well!

Are you wondering how Mandy and Julie's afternoon at the office went that day? They're both Christians so they were able to encourage each other on their lunch hour and then were determined to not lose their Christian testimony at the office that afternoon. With silent prayers and encouraging smiles, these friends could shine in the face of adversity because they possessed a secret weapon the power of the Lord!

If you don't know Jesus as your Savior yet, you can pray the following prayer and your life will change - eternally! You don't have to wait until you feel that you are good enough to approach the throne of God. The amazing thing about God is that He accepts you just as you are! And when we come to him, he changes our life into something amazing are you ready?

Dear God, I know I am a sinner. Please forgive me. I believe that Jesus died for me on the cross and that He arose from the grave so that I can live with Him in Heaven someday. I am now trusting Jesus as my Savior. Thank you for loving me and saving me. Amen.

May God bless these words as I strive to encourage others in their walk with Christ. Please contact me if you would like to request a specific lesson that Lucy Mouse can teach your children or if you would like a coloring page to be sent to match the story!
