Mankind's 6,000-year Trial Run

by Daniel Farnstrom
3/23/2010 / Bible Studies

Is Earth only 6,000 years old? Honestly, I don't believe that it is. However, there is a clear implication that mankind's period of self-government is to only last 6,000 years (whether lunar or solar is not entirely certain). This testing period follows the same general test periods as Moses and the first three kings of Israel. Just as Moses could not enter into the Promised Land and just as Solomon would be the last king to rule over a United Kingdom, so to must the rule of mankind's self-governance come to an end. As I like to keep things brief, I will only address certain aspects of this particular question.
Before addressing certain verses in support of the above, I will remind the reader that just as the first Adam was created on the sixth day, so to was Yeshua crucified toward the end of the sixth day. Just as mankind will have been given the opportunity to try self-governance for 6,000 years, so to will Yeshua arrive at or toward the end of that period and we will have 1,000 years of rest and joint rulership during the Millennium. It is important for one to keep these facts in mind. Now, we will look at some verses.

Genesis 6:3 (KJV)

3 And the Lord said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.

The above verse brings to light three separate facts

1) The Lord made this determination in the 480th year of Noah's life.
2) A hint as to how long Moses would live.
3) Number of Jubilee cycles since Adam that man would be allowed to self-govern.

It is to the last of the above that I wish to direct the reader to. A Jubilee cycle was 50 years. Thus 120 Jubilee cycles would yield a period of 6,000 years. That is the amount of time that God would "strive with man" before establishing His Kingdom on Earth for eternity. Let's now look at another verse which lends support to the 7-day-7,000-year pattern.

Psalms 90:4 (KJV)

4 For a thousand years in thy sight are but as yesterday when it is past, and as a watch in the night.

We have six days of creation and 6,000 years of governance. We have the seventh day of rest (Sabbath) and the Millennium (1,000-year rest). Let's look at another verse.

II Peter 3:8 (KJV)

8 But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.

The verses in Psalms and II Peter are similes utilized by the respective authors. The verses certainly do a fine job of illustrating the eternal nature of God as well as His patience and forbearance with mankind. Further, the verses point out that God does not forget His promises, but that humans and God do not view "time" in the same manner. However, the verses also hint at the pattern previously mentioned. Let's look at some final verses in Revelation (I will just reference the applicable portion of each verse).

Revelation 20:2,3,4,5,6,7 (KJV)

2 and bound him (Satan) a thousand years
3 till a thousand years should be fulfilled
4 and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.
5 lived not again until the thousand years were finished.
6 and shall reign with Him (Christ) a thousand years.
7 when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed

After Revelation 20:7, Satan is loosed for one final try to get mankind to go astray. There will be one final great battle. After comes the Final Judgment wherein Satan, death, hell and all those not written in the Book of Life are cast into the lake of fire. However, the one thing that should "jump out" at the reader of Revelation is that the phrase "thousand years" is mentioned six times before the Final Judgment and the establishment of God's Kingdom for all eternity!
