JESUS ENTERS JERUSALEM

JESUS ENTERS JERUSALEM

Matthew 21:1-11

Since this is Palm Sunday it is appropriate to talk about Jesus Triumphant entry into Jerusalem. That is what we are to remember on this day.

At this point Jesus had determined that he was going into Jerusalem for the Feast of the Passover. He knew that the High Priest had put a contract on him, but he also knew that there was nothing they could do until it was the Father's time. He continued to do good, healing others and teaching his disciples. He tried several times to tell them that they were about to graduate from his school but they didn't want to hear it. They wanted him to be there forever. Then he stopped on the top of the Mount of Olives and sent two of his disciples into Jerusalem to get a colt to fulfill the Prophecy in Zechariah 9:9.

As they started down the Mount of Olives with Jesus riding on the colt the disciples started praising the Lord and the multitudes joined in and cut down branches to fulfill Leviticus 23:40.

Why were they praising the Lord with such enthusiasm? Was it because they remembered the prophecy of Zechariah or was it because they were just joining in the crowd? Remember Jesus had more than just 12 people around him all the time. The 12 were his hand picked disciples but there were at least 120 people that followed him all the time for the last three years. I believe that their motive was as joining in with the crowd. You see they had seen what Jesus had done over the last 3 years and wanted sincerely to believe in him and make him their king but the High Priest had threatened them to excommunicate them or throw them out of the temple, they would be unable to complete the sacrifices or keep the feasts if they were thrown out and with out being able to do these things they were unable to be cleansed from their sins and go to paradise when they died.

I believe that they felt if the crowd were large enough the High Priest would be unable to keep his threat. They joined in because the Holy Spirit drew them; it was time for Jesus to be recognized as king of the Jews and the Son of God prior to his death. This was the week that the people were to make their choice to stand with Jesus or to stand with the High Priest. History shows the choice that they made and what it cost them. What is your choice? Then think about what it will cost you, every decision costs something and we must count the cost before we decide.
