Father Knows Best

by Jerry Ousley
4/17/2010 / Christian Living

Back in the fifties and sixties there was a series on TV with this very title: "Father Knows Best." It was one of those half-hour programs wherein the kids were constantly getting into trouble and good ole' Dad always had advice to offer in every situation. Somehow everything turned out right.

That isn't necessarily the case in our modern era. Often Dad's live apart from their children and they are in as much trouble as the kids are. But some of us are fortunate enough to have had a father who did offer good advice and sound counseling.

I did. My Dad quite school in the fourth grade you can't do that today but remember this was back in the late thirties. He spent his entire life working hard in foundries that didn't require much education, at least then. He may not have had much formal education but my Dad was a very smart man when it came to common sense and getting things done.

Because he never had a lot of money, he was forced to fix his automobiles himself. If something went wrong with the house and repairs were needed there was never a question as to whether a repairman would be called or not the answer was always NOT! He didn't have the money to pay a repairman so he either fixed it himself or we learned to do without it.

Growing up, I am ashamed to say that I didn't believe Dad to be such a brilliant guy. After the fifth grade I already had more formal education than he did. Especially during my teen years, I felt I was smarter than Dad. I knew a lot about mathematics (or at least I thought I did), the English Language, History, Geography and so on. I obeyed my father but didn't really have the respect for him that I should have.

But you know what? As soon as I hit twenty-one, my Dad suddenly began getting smarter. Had he been taking classes I wasn't aware of? His advice seemed to become a lot sounder, and I understood what he was saying. When I became twenty-one my Dad became a brilliant man with a wealth of good advice, and he knew a whole lot more than I had given him credit for.

What had actually happened was that I finally got it through my thick skull that even though formal education is a good thing, it isn't always a sign of knowledge and especially good old common sense. I've met a host of college grads who possessed a lot of knowledge but they were extremely lacking in the wisdom department (not all mind you, but I'd say you've met your share of the ones I'm talking about too).

Since that day I've taken a lot of advice from my Dad and I've grown to respect his opinion. Had I listened to him when growing up it might have saved me a whole lot of trouble. But then, I wouldn't have as much to write about now would I?

Our Heavenly Father, the Great God of the Universe, has all the answers. His knowledge and wisdom are unfathomable. He's higher in learning than the smartest person on earth, whoever that is, and His wisdom is deeper than we could ever dig. Our Father always knows best for us.

We question him sometimes wondering if He really knows what He's doing or not but in each and every case with each and every one of us, He not only knows what He's doing but He's trying to make things work out the best for us too. In Matthew 6:33-34 Jesus said, "But seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble." Jesus was telling us that we can rest assured that God has our lives. We can make plans but we shouldn't be worried about what is going to happen tomorrow. God already knows and even if things don't go like we think they should, if we listen to Father, they will go the way that is in our best interest. There's enough trouble for tomorrow already so we don't need to be adding to it. Relax in your Heavenly Father, because He really does know best.
