Spiritual Warfare: Trauma's Effect

by Nellie Shani

When the director of the school walked into my office with a concerned look on his face, I already knew what he was coming to see me about. He was carrying photos of a close up of a bite wound on a babys upper thigh. The bite was bad enough that it drew blood. The school was rife with rumors about a little girl that was biting children!

An inter-schools football game had taken place at a neighboring school that past Saturday. During the games, three infants had been bitten. No one knew who had bitten these children. In each case, the baby had just let out a blood-curdling cry! On examination, a bite mark would be found in an area hidden by clothes. One of the infants bitten was the son of one of our teachers.

We think we know who did this! Mr. Radisson (not his real name) said to me, his brows deeply furrowed. I inquired who the culprit might be and the bony fingers of the law pointed to a fifth grade girl called Britney (not her real name)! We have talked with her but she has completely denied it. I want you to have a talk with her but dont sweat over it. As soon as we can confirm this, she has to be expelled from the school! We are writing a report on this whole incident. Some parents are quite concerned.

I quickly understood the scenario. It needed to go on record that the school had turned every stone before expelling the girl. As the school counselor, my signature was also needed before the mallet hit the judges desk! I further inquired how they knew that this little girl was the guilty one and Mr. Radisson told me that in each case of the biting, Britney had asked to carry the baby or was standing near by.

Britney was a rather heavy set twelve year old girl who looked older than she really was. She confidently walked into my office and sat down. Her broad smile revealed perfect white teeth. All her clothes looked tight, as though she had been overgrowing her clothes faster than her parents could replace them!

It was very hard to imagine that this innocent looking girl could harm a fly! I had been praying the whole time that the director left my office to go and ask the girl to come and see me. I pondered over James 1:5 (NIV) If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. The first thing the Lord did was he filled my heart with compassion for this girl. I asked God to help me see her as He saw her. Not as a wicked girl that needed to be expelled from the school, but as a child that was crying for help.

It was not a coincidence that God had brought this girl to my office and I desperately cried to God for wisdom, knowledge and understanding. I knew that if indeed this girl was the one who had bitten these three babies, she needed urgent help. In my involvement with spiritual warfare, God had taught me that it was Satan who used people to accomplish his evil schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms (Ephesians 6:12 (NIV)).

Satan is no respecter of age and would use an infant if he could! I felt the Holy Spirit leading me to ask her about her dreams.

Most of my dreams are about Joanna. She said, as her eyes lit up. Tell me about Joanna. What are the dreams you have about her? I asked her, as I felt a stirring in my spirit that I was on to something.

Britney told me that Joanna was her best friend when they lived in Japan. One day they were riding the school bus together, and they got to the place where Joanna usually got off. She said, Bye Joanna and Joanna stepped out of the bus. As Joanna took a step forward, a vehicle hit Joanna and dragged her on the road right before Britneys eyes. As Britney got to this part, she closed her eyes tightly then opened them and started to look wildly around the room. I was taken aback and started to pray in my heart asking God to intervene.

Britney started to wave her hand as she said Bye Joanna, bye Joanna! I could feel an evil presence in my office. Britneys eyes looked like they were following something in the room. Satan I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to get out of this room! I said loudly. I prayed, confident that Jesus Christ had given me authority to overcome all the power of the enemy!

Britney looked at me like she had woken out of a deep sleep. Joanna has left! she said with amazement. I explained to Britney that that was not her friend, Joanna. I told her that Satan was using an image of her friend to bring fear into her life. Britney wanted to know why "Joanna" left when I told her to leave yet when she tells her to leave her alone, she never listens to her.

I again felt the Holy Spirit telling me to lead her to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. I explained to Britney that that evil spirit had left because I used the name of Jesus. I told her that she needed to confess her sins and ask Jesus to come into her life. I told her that once Jesus was in her life, she could also command that evil spirit that was pretending to be Joanna to leave and it would leave.

Britney said that she wanted to ask Jesus to come into her life. I lead Britney in praying to receive Jesus into her life. She was still on her knees when she said, Joanna is here again! There is blood everywhere! I told her to command the evil spirit to leave in Jesus name. As soon as Britney commanded the evil spirit to leave in Jesus name, it left and she was calm again.

I asked Britney whether it was Joanna who had told her to bite the children and she said Yes. She said that Joanna followed her everywhere asking her to steal and do bad things. I asked her why she did not refuse to obey Joanna. She said that Joanna had told her that if she did not obey her, her mother would die.

I found out that Britney was an adopted child and that her mother had cancer. Yes, that is how wicked Satan is. Satan used a moment of deep trauma when Britney witnessed the death of her best friend, to open her up to this wicked spirit. I cannot explain how it happened, but God let me go through this experience with Britney to open my understanding to an aspect of spiritual warfare that I had not known hitherto.

Britney confessed and asked for forgiveness from the teacher whose child she had bitten. God protected Britney and she was not expelled from the school. For many weeks Britney came to my office every day for prayer and counsel. Her life changed before my very eyes, confirming Isaiah 61:1 (NIV) . . . to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners . . .
