Being a dwelling place for God

by beatrice ofwona
4/27/2010 / Church Life

In Him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. And in Him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by His spirit. Ephesians 2:21-22

God consistently wants us to lead a holy life so that He can boast about us to the devil. The book of Ephesians is primarily about the kind of people God wants us to be so that He can make a dwelling in us. It was appropriately written for people who were originally dead to matters concerning Christianity. The book of Romans 6 tells us how a mind that is controlled by carnality is a dead one. It is one that refuses to submit to God and can neither corporate nor work with Him.

Man was destined for death after the fall of Adam in Genesis 3 but God intervened by sending His son Jesus because of His great love for us as told in John 3:16. The devil is constantly looking to make us fall; however, when we accept Christ into our lives and live holy lives, we make this difficult for him. If you have never met with the devil, then it could be that you are walking in the same direction with him. When challenges come to us let us remember that the one who is in us is greater than the one who is in the world.

How we handle ourselves and the revelation that has been granted to us through the word is important. If our acts of commission and omission cause people to fall or stumble then we too will be suitably judged.

God wants us to be born again through Christ so that we may be worthy of entering His Kingdom. He works from a premise of love to save us. His desire is that we may use the skills and talents that He has put inside each one of us to meet the purpose for which He has created us. Some of us are clueless as to what talents we may possess but if we invest in God and believe faithfully in Him, He is willing to show us the hidden treasures He has put in us as talents for His glory. Each one of us has one's own talents and should therefore not be caught up in comparisons or competitions with each other. It is His delight to show us what else we can be.

Most people have not been able to connect with God to know the purpose for their lives because they are walking in the systems of the world instead of walking with God; they are held captive by worldly convictions, some of which are contrary to biblical teachings. In Ephesians 5 and 6 for instance we are told of how husbands and wives should relate to one another in love and submission and how children should be obedient to their parents in order that they may enjoy a long life. We now, however, have all sorts of worldly advices concerning marriage yet we know that this the one place that God expects to be a semblance of His family, the church. In 1Cor.11:3-10, we are reminded that Christ is the head of every man and that the head of woman is man. Woman came from man and not vice versa. But we have women who have been whitewashed by worldly systems which convince them that they can disrespect and compete with their husbands in the name of equality and rights.

It is quite obvious that people are not reading the Scriptures as they should. Ephesians1:17 talks of the wisdom and revelation that can be given to us in order to understand the ways of God. If we ask the Holy Spirit for this same knowledge he can give it to us. God is more than willing to release us from captivity; Jeremiah 32:27 says nothing is impossible for Him. We need a renewal of the mind as is mentioned in Romans 8:6, a mind controlled by the Spirit and which is life and peace.

Our solution lies in cooperating with God so that He can find in us material to make a dwelling for Himself. He is willing to do this so long as we accept His love and mercy. The question we should all be asking ourselves is this-what structures we have put in place to meet God?
