Is it time to change God's Name ?

Is it time to change God's Name?

We are Americans ! We have the first amendment and free speech. We can say anything we want, to whom we want (except for yelling fire ! In a crowded movie theater or saying Merry Christmas at the public library). Pornography, obscenity, it's all free speech according to the ACLU and the American Library Association, and if you disagree you are a hateful, mean religious fanatic.

In studying God's Word and how it was written down in ancient Hebrew we see that God was considered with a genuine fear and reverence. He was approached with awe and great concern. His Name was spoken only with the greatest respect and after much thought. Even today many devout persons will not spell out His Name, instead using G-d or YHWH. The name is not just a word, not a "household term" as we use others. We are allowed to pray and come into His presence at will, whenever we want. Have we misused this extraordinary privilege. Yes we have. Jesus wanting to bring us to Himself opened up a set of doors that were previously closed. In Moses time, only the High Priest could enter the Tabernacle and offer sacrifice. The statutes of the Tabernacle and then the Tempe set up criteria for coming before God that inspired great fear and trembling. How different today. His Name is a household word, like most others. It is used commonly, in profanity, "free speech" on radio, in the media (we won't even mention the web, it's obvious). The result has been a total breakdown in our sense of order, real security, any future in our days. Where are we going ? If you listed or watch the media zoo there are no limits on our freedom (except for the fire alarm in the movie theater or daring to mention Christ on His birthday at the library). We are free to be as aimless, self-centered and disrespectful as we can be. Has anyone ever seen God, does He exist? If we even ask this then our faith has gone south and we are as rootless as tumbleweeds, going wherever the most vocal and noisy entertainers blow us.

So, maybe it's time to change God's name. Change it to something you can't make into profanity, a curse, a household or telemarketing term or soundbite, or something you can easily cheapen or use for attention-getting effect. Something even the ACLU and American Library Association will think about twice before threatening to sue you for. YHWH (Yahweh), Jehovah, Father. Anything but God. We have insulted Him and we need to confess and change. It's that big a deal.
