Women Food and God Reviews: A Christian Look

by Kimberly Floyd
6/03/2010 / Book Reviews

'Women Food and God', written by Geneen Roth, shines a spotlight on a dark issue: compulsive and binge eating. The author's catchphrase in the book is "how we eat is how we live." She asserts that the way we eat expresses our emotions, approach to life, and even how we view God. The God connection drew me to the book. This review is written to inform others seeking a Godly solution to conquer binge eating.

Upfront I must state that I approached the book with certain expectations; I once battled compulsive eating for over 20 years, with my highest weight at 240 pounds. But with God's power, I learned to turn to him rather than food when I was emotionally upset. I lost 85 pounds and have maintained it for several years. My personal relationship with God is the primary reason for my success. Through my faith in Jesus, I grew to know God as my Redeemer, Healer, Joy, Strength, Wisdom, and Comfort.

I was hoping to see the God who delivered me in Women Food and God. The book began well - it affirmed that you should avoid self-condemnation. This is an essential key to healing. Condemnation only yields shame, depression and frustration. But the bible says that there is no condemnation in Christ Jesus. God's goal is restoration, not condemnation (Romans 8:1).

A revealing conversation was also a positive in the book; a woman disclosed that food was her only source of comfort from emotional pain. That is a key issue of healing binge eating; because the woman believed as truth that food was her only comfort, she stated to Ms. Roth that she would not deprive herself of it.

Still, I do not recommend Women Food and God for those seeking a Godly solution to overcoming compulsive overeating for this reason: On page 16, Ms. Roth says "It doesn't matter if you believe in one God, many gods, or no god." This is contrary to what the bible says: "Thus says the LORD, the King of Israel, And his Redeemer, the LORD of hosts: I am the First and I am the Last; Besides Me there is no God (Isaiah 44:6).

Biblical wisdom tells us to gird our waists with truth. During those times, the waist/stomach area was seen as the seat of the emotions. Its wisdom advices us to secure our emotions with the truth. As Christians, we believe in the one true God and the bible as our source of truth.

I chose to stop reading Women Food and God at that point because by Ms. Roth's statement, you can take God out of the equation and her methods would still work. If that is true, then what role does God play in her process? Is it God as he defines himself or is it god defined as the reader sees fit?

From personal experience, I know that having a stable view of God's love as expressed in the bible, knowing that he has a future and a hope for me, and believing that I could trust him in my healing was essential to my victory.

I urge everyone to keep the points mentioned in this Women Food and God review in mind and use Spiritual discernment when making a decision about whether to read this book.
