I Really Don't Understand, DUH

by Todd Horne
6/05/2010 / Christian Living

I have a bad habit.

Actually, I have several bad habits probably even more than I realize. But, one very bad habit I have may not even seem like a bad habit at all. Oh, but it is.

It goes like this:

I see something I don't like, I disagree with, or I wish was different, and I mutter the words, "I don't understand."

When I drive up to my house and my garage door is open, "I don't understand." It's not that I am obsessed with garage doors staying closed. If you want to leave your garage door open, inviting in thieves, home invaders or simply flaunting to your neighbors and every other passerby how grossly unorganized of a person you are, or how much of a neat freak you are (I hate you), that's your prerogative. My house, my garage door. Unless the car is going in or out, I want it closed.

When I go into the kitchen and several cabinet doors are left in their perpetually flung-open state because neither my wife nor my daughter have realized, like I have, how vitally important it is to the preservation of something somewhere that kitchen cabinets remained closed following their immediate use, I litter the still and pleasant air of my household with the smattering refuse of, "I don't understand."

When I am at work and a co-worker does something differently than I would have done it (which is rare I wish!), a client does not respond the way I envisioned he might, a deadline is not met, or a goal is not achieved, I am always good for another, "I don't understand."

If you're thinking I may have an obsessive compulsive disorder I do want to make it very clear I have been tested for OCD several times to no avail. As much as the world would like to pin that label on me, thus far anyway I have managed to evade the sticky.

What I do realize, however, is that my habitual chant of "I don't understand" is really more than just a bad habit. It is a sin. I am missing the mark not because I say it so often but because I do it. Over and over again, I do it.

"IT" is relying on my understanding. I constantly rely on my perspective of things. I constantly rely on my own understanding.

God very clearly tells us not to do this.

In Proverbs 3: 5-6, we are instructed by God, very explicitly, to trust Him only and to not give any credibility to our own understanding.

Trust in the LORD with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make your paths straight.

Interestingly enough, Eve was not drawn to the evil side of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, rather the good side! "The woman saw how beautiful the tree was and how good its fruit would be to eat" (Genesis 3:6). There is a beautiful perspective and good to the eyes slant to human reasoning that are contrary to the eternal love of God. It is not eternal and will not endure.
