When We Suffer for Doing Good

by Fenny West
6/07/2010 / Christian Living

When we suffer for doing good,
It is Christian and exemplary
Something not quite understood
Yes, without a doubt it's extra-ordinary
And it is made possible by the Holy Spirit.

We're enjoined to be one-minded
And be full of sympathy towards others
Commanded to avoid being high-minded
Not repaying evil for evil to others
And it is made possible by the Holy Spirit.

Ours is to pursue peace with vigour
Keeping our tongues from corruption
Pursuing righteousness with fervour
So we do not come into condemnation;
And it is made possible by the Holy Spirit.

Surely, our reward from God will come.
Let people laugh and poke fun at us,
We're called to shine, let His kingdom come
He who saved us, justified us, will not forget us.
Come, Holy Spirit, come and empower us.

Suffering for Doing Good
8Finally, all of you, live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble. 9Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing. 10For,
"Whoever would love life
and see good days
must keep his tongue from evil
and his lips from deceitful speech.
11He must turn from evil and do good;
he must seek peace and pursue it.
12For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous
and his ears are attentive to their prayer,
but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil."[a]
13Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good? 14But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. "Do not fear what they fear[b]; do not be frightened."[c] 15But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, 16keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander. 17It is better, if it is God's will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil.
1Pet.3:8-17
Come, Holy Spirit. Come and renew me. Come and empower me to live for You. Come and help me to shine as light in this dark world. Come and strengthen me with might in my inner being. Help me, Lord, to rise above circumstances and realise that if God is for me, no one can be against me.

Without you I am weak, worthless, powerless, goalless, visionless and hopeless. But with you I am more than a conqueror in the face of the vicissitudes of life.
