Almost 50

They were married on a Sunday afternoon, the pastor said. My father nodded, I was there. Tears fell from his eyes. The pastor said, and they would have been married 50 years next month. My aunt proudly nodded with teary eyes. Sadly, we were attending the funeral service for her husband, my uncle. The pastor continued, and we are here to celebrate his life, their life.
As I leaned back in the pew to take in what the pastor was saying, I remembered all of our family vacations, the weddings, the Christmas parties, the laughter and countless fun filled moments. I also remembered the special love my uncle had for my aunt. They made it their goal to celebrate 50 years of marriage. I remember their years of marriage as thick glue. There was never a question, they were and would always be my aunt and uncle.
As my dad gripped onto the casket and carried his former little league baseball coach to the Hurst, I was reminded of the impression my uncle left to not just my father and my family, but to me. It was my aunt and uncle's love that brought joy through my childhood. It was the time that they poured into my life that blessed me and shaped me. It is this love, this act of service, and this responsibility that lives on in me. While my aunt and uncle didn't quite make their 50 year goal, they sure made an impact.
What impact can we make for our families? What love can we give to our nieces and loved ones? Do we take our family relationships seriously? I came away with more than just dried up Kleenexes, but a challenge: Our life here on earth is more than what we get, but what we can give. What are my goals? What are your goals?
