Problems become bigger than life in the still of the night. Ask any mother of a sick child if she notices a difference between a croupy cough during the day and night. Sunburn is only uncomfortable in the daytime; during the night, it feels like a three alarm fire. Worries and insecurity can become overwhelming after dark.
Some situations are unavoidable, and we are wise to seek God's counsel. Jesus knew his time of sacrifice drew near. He turned to his loving Father for strength and confirmation. "Father, if you are willing, please don't make me drink from this cup. But do what you want, not what I want. Then an angel from heaven came to help him (Luke 22:42b-43 ERV)." In the still of the night his disciples nodded off to sleep unaware of Jesus' deepest needs. We can find comfort in the assurance that God never sleeps.
