Beware Of Deception, Part 1

by Patrick Oben
7/03/2010 / Devotionals

Deception has ever been there since the fall. And I think there has never been an age in history with the levels of deception we experience today. And it is ever on the increase. Our children's children will have to face even twice what we face today.

Basically, deception is making someone have a wrong perspective about something or a situation by covering the reality. They then go ahead to make decisions or choices based on falsehood. The deceiver often has a goal for deceiving the deceived. Has someone ever covered all or part of the truth from you so that you make an error for him/her to achieve a goal?

The consequences of deception are serious. As truth sets free( Jn8:32), any falsehood leads to bondage. The ultimate purpose of deception lies in its influence upon our decisions and choices. Where we end in the road of destiny does not depend on a mysterious plan in heaven or fate but on the decisions we make. What influences our decisions is one of the most important determinants of our future. If many people are aware of the truth about many situations of their lives, they would not make a lot of the decisions they make. If men are really cognizant of the truth of hell, how many will indeed reject Christ? By blurring the truth or hiding it, men can then be made to make decisions based on a lie. Many would not have married that spouse if they really knew the truth they latter discovered. Many would not have entered that business venture, bought that equipment or do any of our ordinary daily live issues if they were fully aware of the truth. Truth is such a powerful force that once it is known, freedom results. Keeping it from men then is an excellent strategy of our enemy. As truth sets free, that is how a lie in any aspect of our lives brings us into bondage. Imagine if men were fully aware of the reality behind what the TV adverts say, the looks people portray, the outlook of a man or woman that stands as a potential spouse, a budding business opportunity etc. Many people are suffering today because of an error they committed. At that time they were certain they were correct, but now... they can accept they were wrong or even better, they were deceived by something or someone.

I would want you to know that deception of man is not simply just human but has deep spiritual roots. The greatest weapon the enemy, Satan, has against the believer is not power but deception. Check out the many believers who have wrecked their faith or ministers who blundered and you will find out that the devil did not overcome them by power but by deception. They were deceived into doing what God does not approve. There is a power behind deception. Satan is the prince of deception. He is an expert in covering the truth from men and luring them into the wrong path. Whether believers or no, we will be bombarded with deception from our own hearts and beyond.

See how these verses highlight this powerful strategy of the enemy

2Cr 11:13-14 For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.

2Cr 11:3 But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.

Rev 12:9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

Rev 20:2-3 And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years, And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should DECEIVE the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.

The very power that drives sin in the world is basically founded upon deception. It is lust. We are lured to be so passionate about something that even God's command does no longer seem to restrain us. After we get it, we discover it is only a lie. Had Eve really been fully aware of the death of the body, soul and spirit that will come upon her and her children, that fruit will never have touched her mouth. Many young people have reported to me how they got so passionate about a girl and only became so frustrated after the brief fleeting pleasure. This is how the Devil throws us all out of God's path.

Jam 1:13-15 Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man:But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.
Millions are making decisions or choices right now following a lie they have believed is truth. Result? Bondage. The enemy is the prince of deception that deceives the whole world, making people believe a lie thinking it is the truth. Deception drives sin, waywardness, etc.

Except a man knows the truth, Satan will keep him/her tied. Deception in the world and even in the church is at a level of being called an emergency. Deliver us Lord from the deception in the world working even in the men around us. But He has given us His Spirit and His Word to keep us from the deception that rules in the world. It is our place to fill our hearts with the Word and follow the leadership of His Spirit. Except God thus help us, we will not win the deception of Satan. You may easily cast him out by the authority, but what about overcoming his deceptive tricks in the mind and heart?

Overcoming does not only need power but wisdom. The enemy is winning great battles in this battle front. Many wait for him in the arena of power and wholly fall headlong into his lies. Let us put on God's whole armor. Let us have the fullness of what the Spirit brings to us-power, wisdom, understanding etc. See Is 11:1-4
