Peaceful Chaos (Part I)

by Drew Scot
7/31/2010 / Bible Studies

James 1:2-4 (New International Version)

2Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. 4Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

"Everybody up!" Dad cried out anxiously, "Let's get to the basement! QUICKLY, NOW!!!"

The sound was unmistakable. A revolving emergency siren echoed through the valley, signaling a tornado warning had been issued. The Gordons hustled down the stairs then Mom and Dad, Amy and Sara huddled in the doorway of the family room. Mom calmly sang as she cradled 18-month old Cody attempting to comfort him amidst the commotion. The wind whistled through the basement window as emergency vehicle sirens wailed in the distance. "Daddy I'm scared." Sara said, her voice quivering. "Everything is going to be fine, girls." Dad said reassuring both Sara and Amy. He then began to pray for God's protection of their family and for their neighbors.

Within seconds it began; first as a low rumble then progressively increasing to a deafening roar. Soon the home resonated with a sound that could best be compared to a freight train traveling straight through the upper floor of the Gordons' two and one half story home. Dad pulled his family close still praying while mom continued to comfort Cody as he wriggled nervously in her arms.

Almost as quickly as it began, the clamor subsided leaving an almost tangible void where chaos had been. After a few quiet moments Dad spoke, "Sounds like the storm's passed guys." He stood taking Amy and Sara up in his arms, then walked toward the stairs. Mom followed closely behind holding Cody. After a brief tour of the house Mom observed, "Looks like everything's alright."

Dawn was now breaking and as the clouds began to subside the sun peeked curiously through the windows. Dad opened the front door and stepped cautiously out onto the porch. He walked around the debris strewn about the front yard and to the side of the house. In the field behind the house where the barn used to sit there was nothing but a few scattered pieces of wood and some tin from the old tin roof. "Apache! Where's Apache!!!" Dad spun around to see Amy standing behind him. Apache was a young colt that the Gordon's purchased earlier in the spring. He was stabled in the barn the night before because of the predicted storms. "It's Okay, honey." Dad said scooping Amy up. "I'm sure Apache is around here somewhere. We'll find him."

Back inside the house the scene was much the same. Dad and Amy joined Mom and Sara who were standing in the kitchen looking out at the back yard through the sliding glass door.

What's your take?

1. What is a trial (give examples).
2. How would you feel if you lost something you cared for like a pet or a prized possession?
3. Why does God allow us to suffer trials in our lives?
4. What should our response be when we face trials?
5. What can we learn from them?

Spiritual Food for thought

Luke 12:22-31

24Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds!

Whatever we think or feel, God is always in control. Whatever circumstance we face, God is by our side. His Word is clear: We should not worry because if He clothes the flowers of the field and protects the sparrow then how much more will He care for us.

What's the Big Idea?

GOD IS WITH US IN THE STORMS
