Going Through on Dry Land

We couldn't wait for our vacation! Deb and I were going to one of our favorite places, Cumberland Falls State Park in Kentucky. We had visited this park several times and always enjoyed watching the falls. In times past the water was roaring over the falls and it was a magnificent sight to see.

From where we lived it was only a three to four hour drive and it was a good place to stop on the first leg of our vacation that would also include the Smokey Mountains and finally on to the Atlantic Ocean at Folly Beach South Carolina.

When we arrived at Cumberland Falls we were ready to experience that cool mist that was generated by all that water tumbling over the falls. But when we got out of the car it sounded different. Before you could hear the roar of the falls a good distance away, but this time all was still and quiet except for the occasional bird chirping and voices of the children of other families there. What was going on?

It had been an unusually dry summer and the heat was sweltering. A short walk to the falls revealed the problem. Because it had been so dry it was as if someone had turned the tap off on the Cumberland River. Only small trickles of water spilled over the great cliff in the middle of the river. We were disappointed. There were places at the top of the falls where the rocks were completely dry, as they baked in the hot sun.

In Exodus 14 we read the story of how the people of Israel were in a very precarious position. They had fled their life of slavery in Egypt, led by the great prophet, Moses. God was showing Moses the way via a pillar of cloud by day and fire by night. There was a much shorter route that could have been taken, so why had they been led right up to the shore of the Red Sea? To complicate things the Egyptian army led by Pharaoh himself was in hot pursuit after the king had changed his mind one final time about letting the people go.

So here they were; the army of Egypt closing fast upon their heels and a dead end on the other side at the Red Sea. But never fear, God had a plan. Moses was to stretch the rod his rod over the sea. When he did a wind began to blow and it continued all night. The next day miraculously the sea had parted and the people of Israel were able to cross that impassable boundary on dry land! To make the miracle even more spectacular, when the army of Egypt followed across the sea, after the last Israelite stepped out on the opposite shore, the water began to fall. It was like two great waterfalls clashing against each other as it swept over the Egyptian army, leaving them dead. God had delivered His people.

But that's not all. It happened again. After forty years of wandering in the wilderness because of their sin and disobedience, under the leadership of Joshua the people of Israel were finally allowed to enter the Promised Land. But the river Jordan was overflowing its banks due to the rainy season. Now what? One again God worked a great miracle. When the priests carrying the Ark of the Covenant stepped into the water it was miraculously dammed up a few miles upstream. Once more the people of Israel walked across a great body of water on dry land. Some believe this second miracle took place to confirm that God had appointed Joshua as leader after Moses had died. That could well be. But I also believe that it was God's way of confirming to this new generation that He was still with them and His power was just as effective as it had been with their parents.

Now we don't have too many instances of seas and rivers parting for God's people today. That's not to say that God couldn't do it if He took a mind to; He's God and He can do anything He wants to do. But in another way, God parts these great barriers for us each and every day. He's always there protecting, leading, and guiding us. Many can testify of miracles, some magnificent, and some that may seem mild and almost unnoticeable, that get us through our days. A miracle is a miracle whether we think it to be large or small. It is still God's hand on our lives. Take hope today. Rest assured that your problems and troubles will be met with deliverance of one kind or another, and know that God is going to get you through this on dry land.
