A time of brokenness

by beatrice ofwona

We need to know and understand every season that God has put us in. This may be a season of tears and hardship but in Revelation 21:4 we are reminded that there will come a time when He will wipe away our tears and that there will be no more death or mourning, crying or pain. But until then, there will be many occasions to weep. Usually when we weep, we are whining again to God but there should be certain special tears that we should be having instead and especially because we have fallen short of God's expectations for us and for our lack of righteousness. In Revelation 5:3-4 we are told that not a single person was found worthy of opening the scroll or even looking inside it.

We see several instances where weeping is talked about in the bible. In John 11:35 Jesus himself wept when his friend Lazarus passed away; he was deeply moved and troubled in the spirit. In Luke 7:13, his heart again went out to the widow whose only son had died, "Don't cry", he told her. Then he went ahead and brought him back to life.

Still in Mark 5:39 we encounter a lot of wailing when the daughter of Jairus the synagogue ruler dies and Christ is called upon to perform a miracle. Again in the book of Luke 19:41 Jesus' compassion for the city of Jerusalem makes him weep for they have missed their time of visitation with him. Jesus was seeing into eternity as we too should. This, more than anything else that we are going through, should carry a heavier weight in our lives. We must give the people the Gospel and not just do good works for them, because belief in the Word carries eternity with it. If we are finding this hard to do, we need to cry out to God to help us know how. Whatever we do we must carry eternity with us, just like Christ did. In Luke 23:28, Christ sees the future and asks the daughters of Jerusalem not to weep for him but for themselves.

It is a fact that the further we are from Christ, the more concerned we are with what we have to eat or our bank accounts more than our backslidden nature. Our minds, goals and affections are earthbound; everything about us becomes earthly. Sometimes we are cold and unresponsive. We should now return to the Lord and have a desire for the things of God. We should not be complacent but rather passionate about His kingdom because He wants to have His way in us.

When we became born again, we immediately embraced and loved our Lord Jesus Christ, but not anymore. Most of us seem to have lost vision and as such, something in our lives needs to break down; something that must reach now out to the Lord and say, "Help me". We should also strive to do away with all those things that prevent us from seeing Christ.

Even when praying and interceding for others, we should be broken down in weeping so that God can respond to us. In Isaiah 22:4, we read".Turn away from me, let me weep bitterly, do not try to console me over the destruction of my people". We should cry unto the Lord until people decide to do something as the prophet did in Ezra 10. Here we see the people prompted to send away the foreign wives after seeing the desolation with which Ezra prayed, wept and confessed for them in the house of the Lord. Our brokenness before the Lord should bring forth some change.

No matter what it is that we have done, if with a broken spirit and contrite heart and cry unto Him, He will hear and come to us. David, after the prophet Nathan had come to point out his sin of adultery with Bathsheba, cried to the Lord with such a spirit. Psalms 51:17 says, 'the sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God you will not despise'. God is the observer of thoughts and motives, He sees and He knows what we are about, what we are going through, what we want, what we are feeling and how sorry we are for the sins that we have committed or things that we have omitted to do. We must therefore come to Him with such brokenness. Christ himself said that the most thankful are those that are forgiven much.

We may be complacent because everything is going right, yet the devil through our flesh, sin or wickedness, will try to change God's purpose for our lives. As a church we should be talking of God's habitation amongst us and not just His visitation. We must come to the feet of Christ and ask him where he is taking us. Our hearts must be broken before him as we ask this of him so that he can direct us to being a church that makes a difference in the world. The devil is happy with our complacency and if we do not act, nothing will ever change.

Something has got to change; we have to get closer to eternity in our outlook. This is done by fixing our eyes on Christ and showing him that this is a time of brokenness and that we need his direction.
