The Marriage Supper

by Jerry Ousley

Did someone say, "Supper?" I'm ready! I'm always ready, or so it seems when it comes to eating. When we attend a family dinner or special pitch-in event I always come hungry. But I've got a habit of eating turkey, ham, roast beef, mashed potatoes, corn, green beans and a variety of salads until I'm full and there's just no room for desert. I usually manage to hide away a nice piece of that cherry cheese cake, and pecan pie, and maybe a big slice of that wonderful chocolate cake when that happens. It will find its way in the group of leftovers that Debbie will be taking home and afterwards, back at home in my easy chair, when I'm not so full anymore, I'll enjoy that delicious desert.

I remember our wedding. Even though it was thirty-three years ago (at this writing) and even though my mind has a tendency to store things away deeply in the recesses of my brain, I can remember that event vividly. We were in love. We have amongst our wedding pictures one in which I am depicted trying to escape out a back window and my brother and best man are pulling me back in. But that was just a joke because on that day I wanted nothing more than to be wed to my beautiful bride, Debbie.

I'll never forget that moment as I stood at the front of the packed church, watching her come down the aisle to join me where she would agree to be my wife until death do us part. She was the most gorgeous bride I had ever seen. I remember thinking that I couldn't believe this woman had agreed to spend the rest of her life with me.

Afterward came the reception dinner along with all the frills. Then it was time to open the gifts and there were a lot of them. I didn't plan very well in those days because after the dinner we were to spend the rest of the weekend at Spring Mill Park. We had reservations but didn't have quite enough money to pay for it. Fortunately among the gifts were several cash-in-cards. The Lord does provide!

Our marriage holds many special memories for me. There's another wedding feast to which all are invited. We read about it in the latter part of the Book of Revelation and it's called "The Marriage Supper of the Lamb." Revelation 19:9 tells us, "Then He said to me, 'Write: 'Blessed are those who are called to the marriage supper of the Lamb!''" What an event in which to participate! It will be greater than any reception ever held on the face of this planet. Everyone from Adam to me, the least in the Kingdom, will be there! Talk about a hall of fame!

But there is a requirement. Even though all have been invited, only those who have prepared will be allowed to come in. The requirement is to be dressed for the wedding. In Matthew 22 Jesus told a parable which is a type of this great wedding supper. The original guests refused to attend and so the king told his servants to invite anyone who wanted to come. Soon the great banquet hall was filled with people. But there was one found there who hadn't come dressed for the occasion. For some strange reason this man felt that there was no need to put on his wedding clothes. He just came as he was. The man was bound hand and foot and cast into outer darkness.
While we are all invited as guests to this great Marriage Supper of the Lamb, only those who have properly prepared will be allowed to enter. We can spend our life doing good works and deeds. We can clothe and feed the poor, and we should rightly do so. We can sacrifice our life to help others, and that is noble and needed. But if in our life we have not taken time to adorn ourselves with the robe of righteousness the garments of salvation, we will be expelled from this notable event.

There's only one way to do that. We must accept the sacrifice made by none other than the Lamb Himself. We must be clothed in the garments provided by His broken body and shed blood. We must be saved. When we come to Him in repentance, asking forgiveness for our sin of death, He will forgive us and adorn us with this required uniform. And when He does, we have also purchased our ticket that will allow us in to the great Marriage Supper of the Lamb. Do it today. I want to see you there!
