Beginnings and Endings

by Jerry Ousley

I love to watch a good movie, don't you? But one thing I absolutely hate is a movie that starts out good, has a decent story plot but ends leaving you hanging. I watched one the other day that had a great story and it kept your attention. It basically was about a sphere found on a sunken space craft that was determined to have come from man's future. However the captain's log ended with an unknown entry. They mystery was to figure out what this sphere was and what that unknown entry had been. In the end the sphere suddenly shot up out of the craft and into outer space and the three people left had been granted powers to make their dreams reality. To keep from telling what they knew they simply agreed to make their minds forget which explained the unknown entry but man, the ending stunk!

What about the six seasons of the TV series "LOST;" there was a stinking ending if I ever saw one. All those years watching that show, trying to figure out what the final outcome was going to be and it just ended with the explanation that they were all dead! What a rip!

Everything imaginable by man has a beginning and an ending, whether it is good or bad. Because we are finite creations with finite minds, we can't really picture a situation that doesn't include a beginning and an ending. It has to start and it has to finish.

The Book of Genesis has a beginning and an ending. However its beginning and ending, in a way, shows the plight of mankind in a nutshell. Genesis 1:1 (the beginning) says, "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." That was the start of all things. During the fifty chapters of the book we read about how everything got started, how man was created, how he sinned and was cast out of the paradise of Eden, and how he literally messed up with God. We read how his sin continued and even got to the point that God destroyed everyone except for Noah, his wife and his sons along with their wives and basically started over. We continue to read of wars, kingdoms and so on. The book finally ends at 50:26 and says, "So Joseph died, being one hundred and ten years old; and they embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin in Egypt." What a great beginning; but it ends with death; such is the story of man.

We have taken those beginnings and endings we seem to need to define our existence and invented time. We mark our lives in years that for most of us start January 1 and end December 31. New Years Day is upon us. In just a few days we'll embark on our journey into the New Year. Some will begin with resolutions; things they feel need improvement in their lives with a plan to accomplish that. Some will make it while others won't.

None of us know what we'll experience this year. That knowledge is known only to God. He knows and if we'll listen to His voice in our hearts He will direct us through this coming year in ways that will work out for our best. Sometimes it is hard. We may think He doesn't care at all. But He does.

Some may not know Jesus Christ as their Savior. This year it would be wonderful if those folks would make their resolution to get their lives straight with God. It would certainly make a big difference for them.

Whatever is going to take place this year let's determine that we are going to go through it with the wisdom of the Lord, walking hand in hand (spiritually speaking) with Him and whether we see a new beginning, or a coffin in Egypt, well, we'll be ready for either.
