Dear God Tracker

My Priority List: God Family Work

It was well past 10.00pm one Friday night when my lovely wife came into my study. I had been working since early morning, breaking only for lunch and supper. I had not even noticed when Karen popped in for a chat after she had come home from work at five. This was no one-off occurrence, either. I'd been working like this for many months, close to 7 days a week doing what I believed was God's work. "Are you ever going to turn that computer off and spend some time with your family?" she asked.

I have always been under the conviction that Christians should be above reproach. I believe that, as a follower of Christ, I should do all that I do to the best of my ability and with all my heart. To this end, I was totally committed to the work God had called me to. I would go the proverbial "extra mile" just so that my conscience was convinced that I was performing in excellence. However, the harder I worked and the longer I worked, the further I drew away from God's true purpose until I was so consumed by the work of the Lord that I'd taken my eyes off the Lord of the work. As a result my family had become a byproduct of my ministry; my health and my fitness began to suffer and my marriage was threadbare. Although I was bringing in a modest income, I had actually ceased providing for my family. Paul said it like this to Timothy, "If anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for his immediate family, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever," (1 Tim 5:8).

God Tracker, if you are intent on seeking and tracking the plans and purposes of God for your life then let me sincerely encourage you to, indeed, give it all you've got. Let me encourage you to, indeed, work with excellence as unto Christ. However, if you are truly on-track with the God's plans and purposes then you should be working, serving, ministering and functioning in all you do by his principles and presidents and not by your own ambition. To this end, you will not compromise God's priorities for the sake of performance.

Without compromising the work God has called me to do (on the contrary, my output has in fact increased) I made a few adjustments to my weekly routine. I made time for the family and took a whole day's Sabbath. Now I'm very happy to report that, through the council of my loving heavenly Father together with that of my loving earthly wife, I have readjusted my priority list: God family work.

God-tracking is getting your priorities right.

Happy tracking

Dudley

My Work Is In You

Matthew 11:30
"For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."

Pray
"Dear heavenly Father, I realise that I have been doing too many things in my own strength and by my own methods. I'm sorry, Lord. I choose now to give my labours to you and ask that you will show me the things that I'm doing that are not your will for me; show me the time-wasters in my work, O Lord, and help me to focus only on the essentials and to not neglect my loved ones. I draw my strength and stamina from you now. I choose to yoke up with Jesus and ask that you will lead me as my senior partner in business, because my work is in you. To your glory. Amen.
