Stop the Leak

by PamFord Davis
8/03/2011 / Devotionals

Dwellers take a dependable roof for granted until it begins to give way; owners of the house or structure are oblivious to holes or tears until it rains, then a bucket patrol springs into action. Problems may develop gradually or may happen instantaneously when under the onslaught of tornado or hurricane force winds. I have witnessed the destruction following Gulf coast hurricanes and a sea of blue tarps topped buildings like snow-capped mountains. A leaky roof not only frustrates us and taps funds saved for that rainy day, but can damage or destroy the framework and furnishings within. At the first sign of a leak, we are wise to make repairs.

We desire lasting relationships yet we often see them battered and torn. They may appear secure and intact to the naked eye but the storms of life and cutting winds take a toll. "The start of an argument is like a water leak-so stop it before real trouble breaks out (Proverbs 17:14 CEV)." The common sense wisdom and advice of our Proverbs writer is worth a truckload of cover-up tarps. It is far easier for me to plug a hole in one leaky shingle than repair or replace an entire roof. As I see storm clouds of conflict brewing, I want to remember the Dutch boy who stopped up the leak in the dike with his finger. If I use one finger to seal my lips and stop the leaky relationship, the other four fingers point back to me and my part in the argument!
