Destitute. The word describes a person in dire straits. Their situation seems hopeless, out of funds, resources and dreams. Some give up on second chances, themselves and life; others find the strength to face the challenges, seek help and begin again.
As outsiders, we hear of the destitute and wonder why and how a person hits rock bottom. Was there a wasteful spending, addiction or collapse of a business? Did a down economy or medical bills wipe out their savings? How can we help them and avert catastrophe in our own lives?
There is a far worse tragedy. "Remember that in those days you were living utterly apart from Christ; you were enemies of God's children and he had promised you no help. You were lost, without God, without hope (Ephesians 2:12 Living Bible)." Destitute.
Before, after "But now you belong to Christ Jesus, and though you once were far away from God, now you have been brought very near to him because of what Jesus Christ has done for you with his blood (Ephesians 2:13 Living Bible)." Wealthy!
