Teens discuss job plans

by Greg Miller
9/11/2011 / Christian Living

Dwight, a teenager who felt the call of God on his life, invited the members of his church's youth group to his home for a time of fellowship and discussion about their job plans.

"We're going to talk about finding God's will for our lives," Dwight explained.

About 10 of the members of the youth group showed up for the gathering. DeeLoris and Daniel, Dwight's parents, prepared numerous snacks for the group.

After everyone had finished eating their snacks, DeeLoris and Daniel escorted their guests into the den to begin the discussion.

Dwight asked Dominique, his best friend, to begin the session with prayer. "Thank you for this opportunity to discuss your plans for our lives," Dominique prayed. "In Jesus' name, Amen."

Denise was the first to share her thoughts about the future. "My dad is a dentist!," she exclaimed proudly. "And I'm going to follow in his footsteps."

Dana told the group he planned to work as a fireman. "My uncle is a fireman," Dana said. "He has saved several lives while working for the fire department."

"I plan to work as a chef at a Christian college," smiled Desmond. "I plan to take culinary classes during summer school next year."

Daniella stated proudly that she planned to become a nurse. "It will be a wonderful way to share the love of Christ," she said.

David, whose grandfather owned a farm, noted that he planned to raise sheep. "I'm going to sell wool, which can be used to make warm clothing," he said. "And I'm going to sell mutton to supermarkets."

Laughing, David added, "I just don't want to have to kill any lions or bears, and I don't want to have to bring any giants down to size."

Denny shared that for about five years he had been thinking about working as a TV news reporter. "That way, I'll get to know about all the news before anybody else," he bragged.

Darnell said he wanted to work as a forest ranger, "because I want to enjoy the beauty of God's creation every day."

Damon said he didn't have any particular job-related goals. "I'm flexible," he said. "Whatever job comes along, I'll be willing to give it a try."

"What about you, Dwight?," asked Denise.

Well, I've been praying about that for several years," Dwight replied. "I'm planning to enroll in Bible college and seminary, then minister as a missionary."

Dwight said that anyone's career aspirations should be directed by the Lord. "Where God guides, He provides," he observed. "I may be young, but I'm old enough to know that since He is the creator of everything, He knows much more about life than I do!"
