We have Veterans Day observances to meet two critical needs. First, America's veterans must receive affirmation by those they serve, or as retired veterans, served in times of both peace and conflict. The general population has the second need; Veterans Day provides a yearly nudge not to forget the high cost our military men and women pay to protect our freedom. Soldiers march in hostile territory today while we meander in crowded shopping malls.
"Onward, Christian Soldiers!" Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier (2 Timothy 2:3-4 KJV)." Paul reminded Timothy of the constant need for vigilance to assure victory. Salute our veterans and follow their example through commitment to Christ as warriors against Satan's kingdom of darkness and deceit.
