Washing Our Feet

by
4/18/2007 / Devotionals

Jesus spoke to the disciples that "If I do not wash your feet, you will have no part in me" (John 13:8). HE revealed this after HE washed the feet of his disciples with water from a basin and wiped clean with HIS garment. A physical encounter like this carries spiritual implications. The disciples were just blessed with in-depth revelation knowledge, whereby cleaned hands and a pure heart (Ps 24:4) come from God's grace alone. With this spiritual cleansing, will one able to ascend into the hill (Ps 24:3) of God and be closed to HIM.

This closeness or bonding with God is made possible as God breaks the barriers in our lives. All of this will take place in reality if we ask God for it. Peter and Judas Iscariot had their feet washed, but they made a different decision in thanking God. Peter's love for God rekindled, when Jesus re-appeared before HIM and he openly declares his duty to care for HIS sheep. Judas's love died when he loved money more, over HIS master and silently betrayed HIM.

All of us have received the same grace and spiritual cleansing, but showing our appreciation to God is necessary. A simple manner of thanksgiving is relying on God to fight the spiritual warfare and believing HIM in providing the victory. Trying to do this on our own, means we have opted for a silent declaration of our unbelief on HIS capabilities. "The sting of death is sin, and the strength of the sin is the law (1 Cor 15:56)". We can follow all the laws stated in the Bible accordingly, but doing them in the absence of God, is living in the presence of darkness.

God is asking for us to return back to our first love, when we craved so much of God. Yes, when we first knew God and were saved. Having a part of God in us is like having HIM reigning in our homes, our workplaces and our ministries. The cry from our hearts should be for spiritual cleansing, and be present before God without spots and blemishes like HIS Son, Jesus. Wash us, more than our feet alone, oh God! So that our eyes will see you, our ears will hear you and our hearts will treasure your Words. Thank you, oh God!
