Putting God first

by beatrice ofwona
5/10/2012 / Christian Living

At the baptism of Christ, the heavens opened and a voice declared that He was the beloved Son of God in whom the Father was well pleased. We should also pray for the heavens to open up and give commendations about us. Our prayer life should be purposeful and one of expectancy. After His 40 days of prayer and fasting angels came to minister to Christ. Prayer singled out Christ from everyone else. He prayed with faith and never doubted that the Father would answer Him.

Daniel prayed and his prayers released an angel who had been unable to get to him. We too should continue praying ceaselessly and never tire so that the blessings that await us may get to us. The disciples, while awaiting the promised helper, prayed ceaselessly in one accord until the heavens opened up and the Holy Spirit descended on them in tongues of fire.

The devil will always tell us things he wants us to believe -like we will never be healed or that we will never make it, or that we will never get partners to marry us. This is the very devil who in Luke 4 tried to convince Christ to worship him! He does not care who we are and will come onto us anyway. But it is only God's report and voice that we should listen to. We must always be on our guard against the evil one as told in Ephesians 6- the belt of truth buckled on our waist, the breastplate of righteousness in place, our feet planted with a readiness that comes from the Gospel of peace, holding the shield of faith to extinguish the flaming arrows of the evil one, the helmet of salvation in position and firmly holding the sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God.

Without faith we cannot please God and so we should depend on God's Word by faith, obey Him, worship only Him and believe in our hearts that the promises that He has made over our lives shall come to pass. God should not be put to test by us or we should not try to 'help' Him fulfill His promises for us. Only He can help us determine our mission in life because only He knows why He created us..

In Isaiah 61 we see that Jesus came to preach to the poor, set the prisoners and captives free. He also came for the despised, the unwanted and the unclean. He came to proclaim the year of jubilee when all the slaves could be set free. Jesus was not coming for judgment but to proclaim freedom to the people. His mission was not selfish, it was Scriptural. Our missions are going nowhere because they are about us; they are selfish. God is asking us to derive our missions from Scripture. If we read His Word and pray ceaselessly He will reveal to us what this is through His Word. Depend on God. Obey and serve only Him. Jesus did it, how much more is the same expected of us?

May these words (sermons), from various men and women of God be a blessing to all.
