Worth a Tattoo?

Matthew 25:40
"The King will reply, 'Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me."

The Senior Pastor of my church led a series recently. Many Christians have one Bible verse that has become the cornerstone of their lives. There is a scripture that seeps into the core of their being and has done so since the instant they heard it or read it for the first time. This verse is the message they live by and the promise they hold close in all life's situations. A verse worth a tattoo. So is the case with me.

My verse gets to the heart of one of the key messages of the Bible. Love! Matthew 25:40. "The King will reply, 'Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me." I LOVE this verse! Let's break it down.

Jesus is speaking. "Truly I tell you" Stop there. Jesus is always true. He is always honest. So, when he starts a sentence with "Truly," you better believe it is a double portion of truth! "Whatever you did for one of the least " Stop again. Notice the word, "one." One person. You can make a difference in the life of ONE person and know you are doing the work of Jesus. So often we believe we cannot help everyone, and then we shrink back from helping at all. However, that is just a lie we believe, isn't it? "of these brothers and sisters of mine" I also love how Jesus refers to brothers AND sisters. He includes us women as equals at a time and in a culture that regarded women as less important.

And, then there is the ending that just rocks my world! " you did for me." WOW! If you really stop and think about that, it will blow your mind. Think of the homeless man on the side of the street with the sign. That is Jesus. Think of the orphaned child lying in a crib waiting for his forever family. That is Jesus. Think of the single mom working two jobs to make ends meet. That is Jesus. Think of the girl sold into a sex trafficking ring at age five. That is Jesus.

And, that is why this verse is my "life verse," as my Pastor would say. It reminds me of what I have, what others need, and who Jesus says He is and what I can do for Him as a small thank you for what He did for me on that cross.

Do you have a verse worth a tattoo? If not, maybe it's time to find one.

Prayer Dear Lord, thank you for your Word and how it is fully alive. It reaches into our souls and triggers emotions and responses that no person or photograph can touch. I pray you continue to help me look at others through your eyes, never running in fear of what I cannot do to help. But, instead knowing that I can just one and be doing it for You. In Jesus' Name, AMEN!
