Being the trail blazers

by beatrice ofwona

Problems come so that we may remember that we are fully dependent on God. Difficulties and sufferings are with us and serve to make us grow. Romans 5:3-4 says that we rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance, perseverance character and character hope. God has called us for two things; to be and to do; firstly that we be sons and daughters or rather members of His church and secondly to be witnesses, doers and co-workers with Him. When we respond to His call, He makes us new in Him, making us know Him intimately a God close to us, a knowable God. We may read about Him in books but knowing God comes from experiential knowledge, that borne of closely relating to and with Him.

We are witnesses to His existence and call. He has granted us opportunities for learning about Him through His Word and this we carry around with us. 2 Corinthians 3:3 Paul declared to the Corinthians, "You show that you are a letter from Christ, the result of our ministry, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts". Similarly, the letters that we carry around are not written in ink but rather in the very blood of Jesus Christ.

Granted that education in life should be continuous, but what then is it all for if we are not transformed? Surely the work of the Holy Spirit must be seen in our holistic outlook; in the way that we are audible, in our physical forms, in the way that we leave a trail where we walk, in the way that we make use of the education that we have acquired in helping others and especially in the way that we are witnesses for Jesus Christ.

God's Word is not empty and we should continue studying it. It will not come back empty but will instead produce something in us. Like the solar panel faces the sun and takes its fill of solar energy, we too should face to the heavens at our God and draw our strength from Him. The Psalmist in 34:5 says, "Those who look to Him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame".

People want to see results and especially from us saints. People are looking for answers, for alternatives to the empty lives that they live. They want to see a difference that they do not see in the rest of humanity. They want to identify a component in us that attracts them to this Christ that we profess, and we must be able to shine this radiance, this light to them. 2Corinthians 3:18 says, 'And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord's glory, are being transformed into His likeness with ever increasing glory, which comes from the Lord who is the Spirit". He who lives in us must be reflected to the outside world to see.

Being trail blazers therefore means that we pay close attention to God's empowering, enlightening and refreshing Word. It means listening to what the Lord is telling us concerning our situations as a church of Christ because the Gospel is not about us but rather about the message of God. In all this is to always leave a trail wherever we are and in whatever we do. We must leave a mark like Christ did, we must be remembered for what we stood for and the light of God that shone from us and dispelled all the negativity around us. We must leave a legacy.

Whoever we are, strong or weak; we should come to serve Him because it is God who qualifies us. It does not matter who we think we are because only God knows who we really are and what He can make of us for His glory. In Isaiah 41:13, the Lord encourages us, "For I am the Lord, your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, do not fear I will help you".

God will tame those we have to witness to for us. He will lead us to where they are. Sometimes we will feel alone but He will be with us. Like a needle penetrates a piece of clothe and paves way for a weak thread to produce a stitched garment, Christ will penetrate places and strongholds for us. It will not be about us but about Him and so He will be fully engaged in our trail blazing.

As Christians, we are either useful or useless; we must decide for ourselves who we want to be in the body of Christ; yet we should not boast because our confidence and competence come from the Lord. 2Corinthians 3:5 concludes, "Not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything for ourselves but our competence comes from God". Therefore, we can only be trailblazers by the divine enablement of God.
