Haute Cuisine

by Beth LaBuff
9/15/2012 / Humor

I mingled thoughts and mangled words, such as "imagi-dream."
My brilliance humored Mom and Dad and made their faces gleam.
I'd overheard my folks exclaim, "Our son's a clever lad."
Since Father's Day would soon be here, I'd dazzle-stonish Dad!

What could I do to please my Dad; what present would he wish?
His favorite things: to feast on food and cast a line for fish.
I put my brain in over-drive, employed imagi-dream.
A keen idea came to my mind, a yummy fish-food scheme.

I leafed through stacks of recipes, in search of fare to fix.
"Zucchini Whip" looked promising, along with "Fish Hash Mix."
I foraged through our pantry shelves and snatched a can of beans,
A five ounce tin of tuna fish, some pears, and smoked sardines.

Unsure if I could pull this off, I grabbed a spoon and whisk;
Dad's smiling face as my reward, would be well worth the risk.
As my imagi-dream kicked in, I minced the can of pears,
I julienned the sardines, and crumbled saltine squares.

I folded in some whipping cream and fork-split tuna flakes.
I plunked it in a pre-greased pan, the oven set to bake.
This meal would be stup-tacular; I felt my fears subside.
The oven baked my gift for Dad! Fish smells intensified.

***
'Twas dazzle-stonish with each bite; Dad's brow produced a sheen,
He queried what was in the dish; his face turned olive green.
I listed the ingredients, each baking step explained,
My haute cuisine philosophy--
"Nothing imagi-dreamed, nothing gained."

***
The MC's "mingled thoughts--mangled words" list explained.
Imagi-dream = imaginative, dream
Dazzle-stonish = dazzled, astonish
Stup-tacular stupendous, spectacular
