The Holy Spirit-Who is He?-1 of 3

by beatrice ofwona

1 Corinthians 2 9-16 refers to the Holy Spirit as the Spirit of God. He is the one who reveals God to us and helps us understand in wisdom what God has in store for us and what He has given unto us. He is our teacher and is able to help us understand that which God would want us to know because there are certain things that do not belong to us. Deuteronomy 29:29 tells us that 'The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children for ever, that we may follow all the words of this law.'

No prophets ever gave prophecies of their own; they were all led by the Spirit of God to communicate God's will for the people. Who then is He? The Holy Spirit is a member of the Godhead because God exists in three persons namely God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.

Elohim which is the name of God is actually in plural form. When God created man, we see this plurality in Genesis 1:26 when He says 'Let us make man in our image, in our likeness' But God is one. Deuteronomy 6:4 confirms, 'Hear O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.

In Isaiah 48:16b the Holy Spirit is mentioned yet again, 'And now the sovereign Lord has sent me, with His Spirit'. But we now know that the Holy Spirit lives in us as confirmed in 1Corinthians 6:19-20, ' Do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit , who is in you, whom you have received from God ? You are not your own, you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body'.

The Holy Spirit searches all things, He has the intellect and ability to not only search, but also understand things. Jesus Christ Himself spoke of the Holy Spirit in John 16:14, 'He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you.' Things do not have intellect, but the Holy Spirit does because He has a distinct personality as the third member of the Godhead. He even understands us and knows our mind. He is the promised helper who, because He understands the mind of God, helps put the believer at a higher level and in alignment with God's will so that one prays in the right way. It is therefore true that those that walk in His power walk in knowledge.

He is our comforter and not some force. Eph esians 4:30 tells us that the Holy Spirit can be grieved, 'And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.' As we listen to God, we should understand that the Holy Spirit is a person. Computers may conceptualize what they are programmed with but the Holy Spirit is alive; Romans 15:30 talks of His love, Acts 16:6 declares that He has a will as we see Him keeping Paul and his companions from preaching the Word of God in the province of Asia. He is therefore our guide and advices us. Acts 13:2 says, 'While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, "Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them."'

As a guide He will lead us into truth; in John 16:13 Christ confirmed, 'But when, He, the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on His own; He will speak only what He hears, and He will tell you what is yet to come'.

The Holy Spirit is all powerful, in Luke 1 He was present at the conception of Christ. If He helped Mary to conceive by His power, then He too can help us overcome our difficulties because that is who He is, our Helper. He empowered the disciples in Acts 2 in tongues of fire in readiness for their ministry. God wants us to be filled in the same way by His Spirit who is all powerful and omnipresent.

When we think we are alone, He is really right there with us. We cannot run away from Him and the Psalmist in 139:7 understood this, 'Where can I go from your Spirit. Where can I flee from your presence'? The Spirit of God understands what is secretly being worked out in us and for us even when we feel like our lives are not moving. God is never too early or too late with His promises over our lives. The Holy Spirit bears with us and reveals matters to us so that we can engage in even more powerful intercessions. He is all knowing and prepares us for eternity.

Without Him we are vulnerable. Without Him we are like orphans, powerless and unable to witness to others of our salvation. He is the one who tells us the will of God for our lives so that we know exactly how to pray. All those that choose to receive the Lord Jesus Christ as their Savior have the Holy Spirit's indwelling presence. Peter talked of this in Acts 2:38-'Repent and be baptized every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit'.

The Holy Spirit is a person of the Holy Spirit who will walk with us forever.
