IN HER BOOK OF LOVE SHE CARRIED ME
by Don V. Standeford
3/08/2013 / Poetry

Your silk kerchief, tears
that swirled like purple water
Forgiveness's dew, tears long wept
didn't think you were like me,
Weak and wanting to give in
I didn't realize you were human.
But for some reason you pushed,
Always onward, always ahead
urging my thick head
to the heavens, always upward
you didn't care if you mattered
you cared if I mattered, and
those others you chose to serve.
You cried for me
Like you didn't matter, and
Listened to this dummy
Brag about his sins, foolish,
And when sickness struck hard
I walked in a daze
Through endless bus stations,
Over parks, living on malls,
Sleeping on park slides,
Hitch hiking highways lamely,
All the while the traffic flowed
I slept in sawdust in pale moonlight
Awaiting prophecies fulfillment,
God never comes late, despite
Feeling that he does. And you
danced with me that little dance
of life, when death comes to living,
my curse several times, but
you kept on hoping. And you
Sealed me inside your little black book,
Listened to my dreams,
as you carried me in your purse
in a little prayer book, you helped me.
Now the grass has grown over
Your grave, but it'll split open
One day, though the cars con-
tinue in a roaring metal river of life;
It'll split open wide, we'll meet
Again face to face, overcoming
Death will be erased; always
I'll remember you approaching
Me with shaking hands, red faced
To clasp my hands tightly
(Took a chance I'd reject you),
And prophesied strength, my future

And I thought you were an angel.
