My Friend Schnell
by Trevas Walker
6/01/2007 / Poetry

A friend in Schnell I did find,
A friend he found in me.
Friends through blood and sin and fights,
We met when we were three.

A sin filled youth we both did lead,
filled with drugs and hate,
To avoid the homes from which we came,
we stayed out way too late.

Schnell was 19 when they first met
His beautiful future wife.
No lovelier woman have I ever known,
It was the start to Schnell's new life.

No greater love have I ever seen,
In all my forty years,
A love that bloomed and blossomed,
As they worked through all their fears.

The two got married at 19,
That was 20 years ago.
It was a beautiful wintery November day,
When they married in the snow.

"Congratulations" we all said
As they went off together,
A honeymoon on a sun filled shore,
To start their new forever.

Nine months later their child was born,
Schnell's new pride and joy,
A beautiful child with his mothers looks
A lovely little boy.

For the next 10 years, a life of dreams,
Is what most would say they led,
Until one snowy November night,
Schnell woken from his bed.

The officer rang the bell that night,
To tell poor Schnell the news
"Your wife and child are dead my son"
A drunk driver high on booze.

It was that day that I remember,
Schnell turned from his life,
A man of hatred he became,
As he mourned for his wife.

For 10 long years I did pray,
"Please save Schnell from this fate",
The man I knew no longer there,
Now completely filled with hate.

It was this past November,
that Schnell returned to us,
Vision's from God were given,
And in God he now trusts.

As he told his story,
I must admit I cried,
A story of salvation,
The night Schnell almost died.

It was in late November,
The anniversary of their death,
In a drunken stupor Schnell hid,
To try to find some rest.

He had passed out on a sidewalk,
In some distant town,
He almost froze to death that night,
But was awakened by a sound.

"My son you do not see me,
but I am here with you,
You need to rise now my dear child,
Before you get whats due.

I am your father my dear child,
It is time to hear me well,
If you do not change this life you lead
Your soul is bound for hell.

Your wife and son are with me,
They have been here all along,
These past ten years they've been right here,
Singing heavens beautiful songs.

My name is Jesus Christ my son,
I am who saved your wife,
Your son is with me too up here,
Heavens so much more than life.

I know that you are angry,
I see it everyday,
From my place in heaven,
I watch your hateful ways.

You need to stop the drinking,
You need to change your life,
Get up now son and you will see,
I can end your strife.

You see my son I love you,
For you my life I gave,
So your soul could be with me,
When your body's in its grave.

Today is time for living,
For happiness and song,
Through this life I am with you,
I've been here all along.

I know you could not see so well,
when you turned from me,
The prayers of your friend have been heard,
the one you met when you were three.

Your time of hate is over,
Get up and learn to live,
You've many years to do my work,
Your sins I shall forgive."

Today Schnell is a preacher,
He turned from all his sin,
Jesus Christ has saved him,
So that he could begin.

Life is not always easy,
Life is not always fair,
But give your pain to Jesus,
You will know that he cares.

Jesus is our savior,
He gave his life for us.
We are forgiven for all our sins,
When it's him that we trust.

And So I end my story,
Of love and hate and sin,
Remember trust in Jesus,
So real life can begin.

Fairly new to writing, it was suggested by one member that this poem could be made into a booklet for youth groups. Sharing it for that purpose or any other, please let me know if you use it.
