Put your head in the right position

by beatrice ofwona

Everything follows the head so we must have it in the right position. King Nebuchadnezzar realized this and said in Daniel 4:34-"At the end of that time, I, Nebuchadnezzar raised my eyes towards heaven and my sanity was restored. Then I praised the Most High; I honored and glorified Him who lives forever." Nebuchadnezzar had been out of his mind for the longest of time but his sanity was restored when he looked up to the heavens and recognized who God really is.

As Christians, we too must learn to look up to God despite our past realities, our present prospects and our future desires. It is the only way that our present circumstances will change so that we will be able to see the years we have wasted in ignorance like king Nebuchadnezzar who was politically and materially at the top, but God judged him and all that disappeared in a whiff.

God wants to see humility in us. In the book of Daniel we see a proud king Nebuchadnezzar who elevates himself above God. But the goodness of God is such that He warns us before He acts. He may speak to us in a dream as He did in the case of king Nebuchadnezzar or He may send us someone to warn us. Daniel was able to explain the king's dream and in 3:27 asked him to renounce his ways, ". Therefore, O king be pleased to accept my advice: Renounce your sins by doing what is right and your wickedness by being kind to the oppressed. It may be that then your prosperity will continue." But the king failed to grasp the seriousness of the message and God went right ahead and judged him.

Looking up comes when we have received a good message- for we must claim it. But we must also look up when we receive a message of doom because we must pray against it and change ourselves. For God is faithful and He will not turn His back on our prayers. How we live, therefore, is dependent on how we perceive God.

We must acknowledge the sovereignty of God. Some of us have been called to serve Him but we continue eating grass like king Nebuchadnezzar, oblivious of our position. We are living like animals yet we do not even know it because we are not in our right senses. We must look up, beyond our present circumstances and see what God has planned for us.

God is good but man is not, yet, God in His mercifulness positions for us seasons and times of restoration and renewal. Even though He may sometimes judge us, He still remains good. We cannot afford to harden our hearts towards Him just because we do not believe in His promises. In Hebrew 3:7 the Holy Spirit cautions against unbelief, 'Today if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion during the time of testing in the desert."

God will come through for us in our distressing situations; in 2Corinthians 6:2 He says, "In the time of favor I heard you, and in the day of salvation I helped you." It is in this knowledge of God's goodness that the Psalmist in 119 positioned himself to give thanks to God for His goodness; in verse 5 he says, "In my anguish I cried to the LORD and He answered by setting me free." Further we see an admission of God's supremacy by the Psalmist in 32:7, "You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance."

God wants us out of trouble and living in abundance. He is eternal and reigns forever. He is worthy of our honor and praise. Like king Nebuchadnezzar, we need to receive a new perspective of who God really is. God is loving and gives second chances to us so that He will restore us when we realize the truth of His sovereignty and majesty, like He did for Nebuchadnezzar. May we look up and see what more God has for us. We may think that we have arrived, but we have no idea, whatsoever, what else God has in store for us. Nebuchadnezzar became greater than he had been before. When we abuse our God given gifts, we are a lot like animals. But thank God for His restorative mercies when we realize our folly. God is still on the throne and the creation, fall, redemption and glorification of man was all part of His strategy to finally save man.

.When we position our head to looking up at Him, He helps in the renewal of our minds by tearing down the strongholds of wrong patterns of thinking; He helps us to realize our full potential. Also, there is no doubt that right thinking leads to right worship.

We should therefore dedicate ourselves more to the study of the Word so that we can discern what we need to do; fast more, pray more and give ourselves more to the things of God and He will most certainly bless us.
