Believe, Obey and Love

by Steve Countryman

There are three things that we Christians are to do, believe, obey and love! Those three things are tied together and are inseparable in God's kingdom. Each one is tied to the other two. If you don't believe then obey and love doesn't matter. Likewise, if you don't obey then you don't believe or love. And if you don't love then obeying and believing is in vain. You have to believe in God to obey and love Him. To prove your love for God you must obey Him as you believe in Him. If you don't obey Him then you can't believe and love Him. All three of these have one thing in common, they are all done by choice. You must choose to believe, you must choose to obey and you must choose to love!

1 John 3:23 And this is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us. You must believe in God to believe that the creator of heaven and earth also created you. But that isn't enough because even the demons believe in God but they cannot be saved. You also must believe that God created you for a purpose, for His purpose. That God sent His One and only Son to die for ALL of your sins because He loves you that much. Your faith is tied to what you believe in. Your faith doesn't exist without your beliefs. God exists in you through your faith. Hebrews 11:6 And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.

John 14:23-24 23 Jesus replied, "Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. 24 Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me. Obey is what you are commanded to do. You are to obey God's commandments and His Word. Disobedience to God is to rebel against God's Word and His will for you. Delayed obedience is disobedience! You cannot obey God if you are not willing and available to do what He asks of you. Making excuses, ignoring God, putting Him off or partially doing what you are supposed to is all examples of disobedience. "But I don't know how to do what God wants. Why doesn't God find someone else more qualified to do it?" If God wants you to do it then God will make a way and give you the grace to fulfill His command of you. Your love for God is proved every tine you obey Him and His Word!

Mark 12:30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.' God commands all of us to love Him. Yes it is a command not a request or a suggestion but a command. That means that all of us must make a decision to choose to love God. To make every effort to love God and all things that are of God and from God. It is amazing how God's love works. 1 Corinthians 13 1 If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing. 4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears. 11 When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. 12 For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. 13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. We are to love one another. If you don't love yourself then you can't truly love perfect strangers. God loves you. Knowing the Lord better through His Word and through spending time with Him in prayer is when you learn how much God loves you. The more you learn about His love for you the more you learn to love yourself and love others. God is love!

When you choose to do these three things, believe, obey and love in God, to God, with God, for God and through God then your daily walk becomes fuller in the ways of the Lord. A closer walk of intimacy through God's love is revealed in you!
