DELIVER ME - PART 2 - THROWN ON THE MERCY OF GOD

by Jerry Ousley
7/20/2013 / Christian Living

It was the first time in my working life of forty years I had ever been fired. That's right; I was fired from a job. I have worked since I was fifteen years old. I've had a lot of jobs in my life. I've taken a lot of jobs and I've quit a lot of jobs but I've never been fired from a job.

That all changed. I was working as the I.T. "Guy" (that stands for information technology). It had been one of the best jobs I had ever had in my life. I loved the work and in a year and a half missed only one day. But because the small company had adopted procedures that fit only large companies taking more time to complete a task, I had protested that there was a better way. I had not refused to do the work but had merely expressed my opinion. For that I was told that my philosophy of I.T. work no longer matched that of the company and I was immediately dismissed from my position.

I know that a lot of you can relate to this incident. Many have lost their jobs in one way or another over the past few years. It isn't fun and it isn't easy, but it is life. It forced me to seek God. There were no other jobs available for which I qualified and so I struck out on my own. I started my own business working on computers and building websites. So far, God has granted me business and although I'm not getting rich by any means, God has allowed me to make a living. Talk about squeezing lemonade from lemons!

In Psalm 25:20 we hear the cry of the great king David, "Deliver me!" Here was a man who knew trouble. Yet he was called "A man after God's own heart." He was constantly asking God to deliver him from trouble, some caused by others and some brought on by his own actions. He wasn't perfect. He made mistakes, and sometimes he committed sin.

The difference was that he knew how to throw himself on the mercy of God. He realized that only God could bring him out of his trouble and he wasn't too proud to ask for God's help.

In 2 Samuel 24 we read of an incident where he sinned against God by numbering the people. Because of his sin God gave him three choices; to endure seven years of famine, to spend three months fleeing from his enemies, or to experience three days of plague by the hand of God. None of the choices were good. Seven years of famine could have devastated the land; three months running from his enemies could have resulted in severe persecution from man. The best of the three to David was three days of plague from God. He said, "Please let us fall into the hand of the Lord, for His mercies are great; but do not let me fall into the hand of man." (2 Samuel 24:14). David knew that even though God had great power and could do more harm than any of the other choices, that it was better to be in His hands than those of man.

It proved to be a wise choice because of the mercies of God. We too must learn that when we are in situations that demand we cry out "deliver me" that the best choice is to be thrown on the mercy of God. He alone can bring us through our calamities. Only He knows the best answer to our needs, our health, and our financial position. The answers may not be what we want or expect, but let me assure you that God's answer will be the best choice in the long run. His mercies are great! His wisdom cannot be surpassed. It is better to go through our bad experiences in the hands of God than in the hands of man.

If we want to be like David; if we want to be a man or woman after God's own heart, then we must learn to not only cry out to Him for deliverance but also be willing to be thrown upon His mercies. When things look bleak, impossible, with no hope, then there is no better place to be than falling into the hands of God. If we must fall, let us fall there.
