A well-known respected person dies in my community. Friends and neighbors learn of his or her passing and share the sad news with one another. Often, I've heard a standard but not trite phrase. The individual was a pillar in their church. That is an interesting observation. I first think of the stately beauty of pillars I see on fronts of southern mansions; in addition, I sense their support to such structures. I recognize and respect pillars of the New Testament church.
"James, Peter and John, those reputed to be pillars, gave me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship when they recognized the grace given to me. They agreed that we should go to the Gentiles, and they to the Jews. All they asked was that we should continue to remember the poor, the very thing I was eager to do (Galatians 2:9-10 NIV)." The Jerusalem pillars partnered with Apostle Paul and co-laborer Barnabas. Embrace Christian pillars and partner through prayer.
