What He has done for us

The book of Colossians expounds greatly on the doctrines principles, teachings and practices of Christianity. It is important to have knowledge and apply it because wrong doctrine and principles will lead to the wrong practice. No passion or love of God will compensate for wrong teachings, that's why what we must be solidly grounded on the doctrines of Christ through the Word. In Romans 10:2-3 Paul speaks of the Israelites who were zealous but wrongly so-'For I can testify about them that they are zealous for God, but their zeal is not based on knowledge. Since they did not know the righteousness that comes from God and sought to establish their own, they did not submit to God's righteousness.' This clearly shows us that with the wrong principles, even morality can be warped. The book of Colossians was therefore written for the purpose of dealing with wrong theology and in it Paul assured the Christians that they need no intermediary between them and God except Jesus Christ Himself.

Certain people promote the caste system by what they believe in. This was the issue in the Colossians epistles which J.B.Lightfoot and R.C.Lucas refer to as traditions of men-Judaists- who bring intellectualism into Christianity. Such men contradict the fullness and freedom that is in Christ and the power that is beheld even over demons. They ignore the supremacy of Christ that is spoken of in Colossians 1. Jesus is the essence of the Gospel, the centre without which everything else falls apart; Hebrew 1:2 asserts, "..but in these last days He has spoken to us by His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things and through whom He made the universe." Colossians 1:15 speaks of Him as the incarnate God-"He is the image of the invisible God, the Firstborn over all creation." All things were created for Him and we should therefore not put anything else over Him.

Fear no evil therefore because the majesty of God is on Christ who is our conqueror. Satan can only do what he is allowed to do but even then God assures us that He is with us. In 1Corinthians 10:13, God encourages us that nothing is new "No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it." Inviting Jesus Christ into our lives is inviting the supreme God of all creation and the church. He is the real and only deal. No pastors or popes are the head of any church, the real Head is Jesus Christ. He is the author of life, the Heir to the blessings of God. He is Lord over all. All the fullness of God is found in Him. Colossians 1:18-19 confirms all this, 'And He is the Head of the body, the church; He is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything He might have the supremacy. For God was pleased to have all His fullness dwell in Him'

Jesus Christ reconciles all things to God and this is necessary after the fall of man when man disobeyed and broke away from communion with God. This reconciliation was initiated by God through Christ therefore Jesus is the accomplished work of God which was achieved at the cross. This is the message of the Gospel which we should preach about and just like Paul in 1Corinthians 2:2, it is all we should be concerned with in our preaching-'For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.'

Salvation is only through the cross and by His saving grace, God wants us completely saved and holistically so. The false lie of the Corinthians that they could be involved in sexual immorality yet remain saved was quickly rebuked by Paul. Likewise, our hearts must be saved as all other avenues and corners of our lives.

Christ is all sufficient and can sustain the world. Colossians 1:17 confirms, 'He is before all things and in Him all things hold together.' If this be the case therefore, then there should be no dichotomy between the secular and the sacred. Serving God should be seen everywhere in our lives and daily for that matter. None of us are elite Christians and as such we are all equal and should all fast, pray and do all that pertains to our Christian lifestyle because Christ set an example for us.

Christ existed before creation but is still the one in existence in us today. He was the Creator before time, the one in the time of redemption, and the One who is now. Colossians 1:15 says, 'For by Him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by Him and for Him.' He does not change; Hebrews 13:8 explains, 'Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and for ever more'.

When one gets saved, one becomes a beneficiary of all that Christ is to us, a partaker of all that He has done for us. He dispels fears, He withholds treasures which He is willing to give to us and He protects us from the devil's wiles. Jesus Christ is the answer and that is what God has done for us through incarnating in Him.
