A Cat's Life

by Jerry Ousley
6/14/2007 / Christian Living

We had this cat. She just wandered into the yard one day, just a kitten really, but she wasn't afraid and just took up residence. When my daughter gave her something to eat it was really the deciding factor of where she wanted to live and so, we had a cat. She was justly dubbed "Sweetie."

It didn't take her long to get domesticated and, well, when winter came we just couldn't make her stay out in the cold, and so, she resided inside. At first it was a novel thing and she really seemed grateful to be in out of the cold. But as the days wore on and she became accustomed to her new surroundings, some settling in began to take place.

Now, while we work all day and take care of business to earn the money that feeds all of us, including "Sweetie," she does absolutely nothing to earn her keep except be "sweet." She plays whenever she wants; she sleeps whenever she wants and she gets to eat free of charge. WHAT A DEAL!

As I thought about this "arrangement" I realized that many of us would really like to have a deal like that ourselves. It sounds good, and is the kind of things dreams are made of, but in reality, it just doesn't happen that way. And, let's face it, after a few days of sleep, playing, and just wandering around, we'd probably get so bored that we would just flitter our life away.

That's why God doesn't allow us to live "a cat's life." He knows that we need to stay productive and we need something going on in our lives. We just don't know when to quit sometimes.

God is always merciful to us, even when we don't realize it or even think He cares. Whether we believe in Him or not, He lets us all breathe the same air. He keeps us alive day after day, even when we are disobedient to His will.

When we realize this, it makes us want to seek this great and mighty God who is so kind and loving. Begin your search for God today and never stop. It's only when we stop looking for Him that we get into trouble. If you're searching for God, keep it up because the Bible tells us "If you seek, you shall find" (Matthew 7:7). But if you stop seeking and get comfortable, well, you might just find yourself living a "cat's life" but where's the fun in that?
