Anger Is A Choice

by Irma Green
11/20/2013 / Bible Studies

I want you to know that, you choose to be angry. You may say "I don't choose to be angry, I am angry because of what that person did to me." They very well may have done or said something to upset you, may have done some thing you did not like - but how you "reacted" was your "choice".

Matthew 15:11 - Not what goes into the mouth defiles a man: but what comes out of the mouth, this defiles a man.

When you are angry with someone and start saying bad things about that person - you are not hurting that person as much as you are hurting yourself.

When you are angry with someone, did you know that, that person is in control of You? They control your happiness, your thoughts, your actions, your behavior and your feelings. And the sad part of that is, sometimes the person you are angry with doesn't even know you are angry with them. Here you are, an emotional wreck and they are going on about their business happy as a lark. Not in the least bit concerned about you.

I want you to know that, there's probably nothing that damages us more physically, emotionally, or spiritually than anger. Kill that anger before it kill you. Every time you are angry with someone you are nailing another nail into your coffin; you are building your own coffin.

Some people's anger is tripped so easily; they have what is referred to as a short fuse. Any little thing can set them off. That used to be me - thank God for delivering me from that.
You cannot walk around calling yourself a Christian, a child of God and cannot control your anger.

You must get control of your anger; those sudden flair-ups. Ask yourself? Was it worth it? What was accompolished by it? Did the anger solve the problem? Did it make you a bigger person? NO! NO! NO! It only caused you to lose your blessing, because your action was not pleasing to God. I John 3:22 "And whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do those things that are pleasing in His sight."

Proverbs 15:1 "A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger." It's all in the way you say some things; it's all in the tone of your voice.

Proverbs 16:32 He who is slow to anger is better that the mighty.
Proverbs 14:29 He who is slow to anger has great understanding.
Proverbs 19:11 The discretion of a man makes him slow to anger - and his glory is to overlook transgression (forgive).

These Scriptures are telling us to be slow to anger. And if we are slow to anger, we might not do it at all.

Angry people usually justify their anger, saying it is someone else's fault that they are angry. Instead, we should respond with wisdom and a gentle spirit.

Proverbs 15:18 A hot-tempered man stirs up dissension, but a patient man calms a quarrel.
Proverbs 20:3 It is honorable for a man to stop striving (fighting) since any fool can start a quarrel.
Proverbs 29:11 A fool gives vent to his anger, but a wise man keeps himself under control.

Your anger hurts other, yes, but it also hurts you - spiritually and physically. Most importantly, the Bible tells us that it grives God. Anger is an emotion you can control. "Anger" is a choice - you choose to be angry or you choose not to be angry.
