Worship

Psalms 29:1-2 says -Ascribe to the LORD O mighty ones, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength. Ascribe to the LORD the glory due to His name; worship the LORD in the splendor of His holiness."

The word worship can be said to come from two words worthy and ship. Worship itself can be a noun and a verb at the same time. In the above text of the Psalm, it is an imperative verb; a command is being given unto us. We, who are the subjects in the kingdom, are being commanded to worship our LORD. It is not an option but rather a command. God wants us to worship Him regardless of anything that we may be going through.

God wants us to have communion with Him and Jesus Christ showed us in His submission to God just how this is done- "Not my will, but thy will be done." It is not about us, it is about God.

Worship may not be easy, but we must set the example for others to follow. Christ demonstrated to us where indeed our priorities ought to lie- in worship. For it is as we worship that the LORD turns His very attention to us and blesses us. We may even have many problems but Christ tells us in Mathew 6:33, "But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." Worship is therefore not a footnote but rather the very first thing that we are called to to be worshippers of God.

The more we know God, the better our worship will be. He has given us eyes that we may see but we can ask Him to open them that we may be able to see the things that are dear to Him. It is God who sits in judgment of all and who sees us for what we are. Worship is therefore ascribed to Him; it is an activity that acknowledges Him for who He is. We should ascribe glory, power and honor to Him alone.

Wages are given for work done and people offer allegiance to employers because of these. Our worship is what we give back to God for all that He has done for us; but God looks for people who do this in truth and in spirit. The more we worship Him, the greater the benefits we get. Infact if we have been long enough in His presence, our whole countenance and posture will change.

God has done so much for us. If we are to look at what He did for us even before we knew Him, we would yet be thankful to Him and worship Him; Romans 5:8 declares 'But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." But we are always in so much of a hurry; we do not even create time for Him. Jesus prostrated Himself at the Garden of Gethsemane at His hour of need just to let God's will to be done. If we truly love Him, we must set aside time to be with Him daily and allow His will to be done in our lives.

How then are we at our place of worship? Or has God become so familiar to us that we are now casual with Him? Job and Abraham realized that man is just dust and ashes- burnt out and nothing. This demonstrated the attitude of humility that they had when they compared themselves to the awesomeness of God. The children of Israel were known to revere God so much that they could not pronounce His name with the vowels.

What do we tell our minds about God? Do we ask Him to scrutinize and show us who we are as the Psalmist did in Psalm 139:23-24- "Search me O God and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me and lead me in the way everlasting." It is in that place of worship that God may reveal such things to us; when we fail to worship God, we lose out.

How then do we treat God? Are we like Belshazzar who failed to revere Him and in Daniel 5:2 ordered that the gold and silver goblets that had been taken from the temple in Jerusalem be used by his wives and concubines to drink wine? Did God not deal with him ruthlessly for failing to honor Him? Did the man of God not rebuke him in Daniel 5:23b? "But you did not honor the God who holds in His hand your life and all your ways." What had been brought to the house of the LORD belonged to God and should have been left only for Him. Similarly, when we misappropriate what has been brought into His house, we sin.

Some people may even know God yet deny Him and fail to worship Him. Romans 1:21 spells out the danger of such folly, "For although they knew God, they neither glorified Him as God nor gave thanks to Him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened." Judgment remains for those that fail to recognize and worship the one true God as Romans 1:18-32 tells us.

As the Psalmist declares His loyalty to God in Psalm 42:8 "By day the LORD directs His love, at night His song is with me-a prayer to God of my life," we too should consciously worship the Almighty God, the very one who has revealed Himself to us in so many ways. The Spirit of God has opened our eyes yet we give Him very little recognition or glory or worship. We have time for everything else but Him, yet we should be wary of our actions as Exodus 20:4-5 warns us-"You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me" God is patient and long suffering but we cannot take His glory to another person or thing or hobby or career or activity. God is the one to be worshiped and all gory strength and honor ascribed to Him. In Acts 12:23 Herod suffered for taking this glory upon himself- "Immediately, because Herod did not give praise to God, an angel of Lord struck him down, and he was eaten by worms and died."

We must keep pure and avoid idol worship because God hates those who take what belongs to Him. We worship Him in the beauty and splendor of His holiness. Psalm 92:8 expounds-"But you, O LORD are exalted forever."

It is not about our dressing or about the kind of voice we may have but rather about what is happening in our hearts. We just need to delight in His greatness and presence; see Him for who He is. And when our worship is right, He reveals things to us as we lose ourselves to Him.

We need to pray therefore when our mind is alert, bear an attitude of exalting Him and have a manner of profound humility. And the realization of who He is will bring us to that place of worship.
