Genesis 1:26 and purpose

by beatrice ofwona

'Then God said, "Let us make man in our image in our likeness and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground. "

We celebrate many occasions births, promotions etc. Similarly, stewardship should also be celebrated. In the above text, God gave man stewardship, He did not just create him haphazardly, He had a purpose for creating him; our stewardship has a divine purpose. And our calling is the discovery of this purpose. We are on earth for a definite purpose. It is this calling or purpose that gives us direction, motivation and satisfaction.

If we are unable to recognize our purpose, we lack direction and meander through life dissatisfied and discontented. We should therefore not take the route that is taken by others but rather that which we feel called to. To be a success therefore, we must discover our purpose.

Motivation will come from God who will give us the energy to focus on our calling and ignore the obstacles that come on our way.

Satisfaction, joy or a sense of fulfillment will not come from how much money we are making but rather will be a function of how much we impact other people's lives according to the purpose for our lives. Life becomes enjoyable for those who are engaged in God's purpose for their lives.

In Genesis 1:28, God blessed man to fill the earth; he was to receive the ability to procreate. Although this ability is given to us in a personal way, God promises to always be with His people. His hope in us is that whatever we do; we do it with energy, fervor, zeal and persuasion so that He may bless us. This is a blessing that He bestows upon our lives and is given out of His love and grace. This is why while we were yet sinners He gave us His Son to save us as declared in Romans 5:8. When we worship Him therefore, we do not do so that He may give us anything else because we are already given. It is only when we recognize this that we are able to truly worship Him.

Our success in life is guaranteed for as long as we are walking with God. The blessings that He has given us guarantee that if we do what we are gifted to do, it will feed us and fend for us. Ignorance may be the main reason why some people are not succeeding; Hosea 4:6 says, "..my people are destroyed for lack of knowledge."

God has a design for us all so we do not need to compete with those who do not care about what we do. We only have to be the original that we were created to be. Money is not everything because our increase lies in our calling. Each and everyone one of us was in the mind of God as He created us. And so we love Him because He first loved us. He is the Sovereign God who ordained and pre-determined what would come out of us. We can ask Him to open our eyes that we may see the opportunities around us. Proverbs 20:12 teaches that, 'Ears that hear and eyes that see, the LORD has made them both."

God has deadlines, times and seasons. We are created for our generation and if we miss out, we miss out for good. We were created for a time such as this and if we miss out on serving our generation we have truly missed out. God is always on time and we too must do what we need to do now because if we are to succeed, we must be in His flow; Proverbs 21:30 tells us that "There is no wisdom, no insight, no plan that can succeed against the LORD."

It is good to celebrate what we are doing because there is a purpose to it all. God has communicated His intentions in creating us. And after He had completed His work He rested. It is now our responsibility to set the ball rolling and do our portion before the final rest for those who will have done His bidding comes; this will be determined on judgment day. In the creation account in the book of Genesis, Scriptures tell us that God saw that His work was good. What then will be said of our work?
As Christians we need not walk around in fear for we are of greater worth than birds; Mathew 6:25-26 assures us, "Therefore, I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?"

Let us then be driven by the values of the kingdom of God; our destiny is not determined by where we start but rather by where God fore-saw us. His timing is always right.
