Take A Selfie

by Buife Nomeh
5/31/2014 / Devotionals

'Selfies' are kinda in vogue. You know, you dress up (or even be in your night wears), stand in front of the mirror, grab your iphone and start taking photos of your reflection in the mirror. The upside of selfies is that one is both the photographer (behind the camera) and the model (in front of the camera). You don't have to wait till you've taken a photo to view it, you can see what is gonna be like (via the mirror) before taking the shot.

I want to talk about another kind of selfie, different from the digital selfie. It's what I'd like to call a 'spiritual selfie'. Every now and then, we need to take a stand in front of the mirror of God's Word and see ourselves in the light of it - as God sees us. Why, you may ask?

Well, here's the thing; pride is subtle. It is easier than we may ever know to begin to feel overtly righteous. We get so lost in church activities, missions and volunteers that we neglect our personal walk with God. While being involved with activities in church, joining missios and offering to be volunteers in community projects are great, they however, do not, should not and cannot replace God in our lives.

Yes they are things we do for God but, there are times when God requires that we take a break and reflect on the weightier matters.

Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone. - Matthew 23:23, KJV.

It is good to take a spiritual selfie regularly. It is good to judge our intents on a daily basis. What is the reason I do what I do? Why am I involved with this (particular) mission group? Is this where Jesus would have me be? Is this what Jesus would have me do? A little honesty will not hurt. On the contrary, we'd be saving ourselves from God's wrath.

Find yourself wanting? It's ok. At least now you know you need Jesus' help and as always He's willing and ready to offer the help you need. As with the digital selfie, you must be willing to make adjustments and let go of somethings. Again, it's ok to feel vulnerable. If you find yourself at the mercy of God, it's a good place to be because, God is all about lifting up and restoration. He will pick you up.
