Falling Into the Hands of Mercy

by Jerry Ousley
6/27/2014 / Christian Living

We acquired a second cat. I'll try to keep from boring you with the story but what happened in a nut shell was that on a very cold night, temperatures in the low teens and a frigid wind driving the chill factor down to near zero, as Deb and I enjoyed a cozy warm living room, we heard a racket on our porch. Then there was this loud pitiful "meow." Going to the door we discovered a tiny kitten begging for some attention. The best we could figure was that someone dropped her off (people don't like keeping female cats because, well, if you don't spend some hard earned cash to have them "fixed" they have a way of multiplying real fast).

Deb immediately felt sorry for the little thing. I, on the other hand, was the tough one. I knew that if we fed this kitten or allowed ourselves to show it any affection that it was ours for life. At the same time we couldn't turn it completely away. I came up with the brilliant idea of giving it some food but at the back property boundary because the neighbor behind us had so many cats that he'd never notice another one and I hoped that it would find its way over there. So she fixed it something to eat and I hard-heartedly picked it up and carried it along with the food to a tree along our property line. Then I slipped around the back of the garage to get away from it. Mission accomplished job done, or so I thought.

In about half an hour she was back at our door. I still played the mean guy but Deb insisted on bringing it in out of the cold and even though I feigned protest, inside I was really glad and relieved. She had nudged her way into becoming the latest edition to the Ousley household. She was a little thing and we found out when we took her to the vet to make sure she had no diseases or anything, that when she arrived at our doorstep she was probably only four weeks old. Cats aren't normally weaned until around six weeks so in a way she was a little miracle. In just a matter of days old "hard-hearted" Jerry fell in love with this little fur ball what can I say? She was so tiny that she fit in both my hands. How could you hurt a little thing like that? I guess inside I'm really an old softy. Now she's a little over two years old and even though she's very mischievous, she's also very loving and my heart melts every time she rubs up against my leg or jumps up into my lap for a good "rub-down." What would have happened to her if Deb hadn't insisted we show some mercy?

Hebrews 10:31 tells us, "It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God." I thought of little Millie the cat when I read this verse. As I held her in my hands I remembered how we must appear in the hands of this Living God; so tiny, so frail, so alone, so afraid completely at the mercy of the great Jehovah.

Regardless what has happened in our lives or what we have made of them, we all find ourselves in those big merciful hands. We deserve to die. Because of sin in our lives justice would demand that God close those powerful hands and squeeze the very life from us. He could. But sitting there in His hands He feels compassion, love, and somehow understands what's going on inside of us. He knows the pain that may have driven us to do the things we've done. He knows the hatred that might be harbored in our hearts. He knows the fear we deeply suppress so that others might think us to be hard, tough and raw. God knows.

Instead of yielding to justice He wants to make us whole, complete and what He created us to be. And He will if we allow Him too. If we will see His kindness, turn to the salvation provided in His Son, Jesus Christ, and allow Him to begin to make the miracle of New Life a new birth completely saturate us, then we will know the mercy of those hands.

Let God change our destiny. Let's trust those big hands we've fallen into. If we do, we will find that those hands that formed everything are safe, secure, and we'll discover the mercy found in the hands of God.
