Abide

by Michael Hume
7/12/2014 / Christian Living

Jesus said "Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in me. I am the vine, you are the branches, he who abides in me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing." John 15: 4,5

Even if you are a Christian and desperately struggling in your faith and disciplining your life with daily prayer and Bible reading, the world can creep into your life and being making you feel worldly. It may be that your thought life has become worldly too. It can be hard to have an effective faith life in the world. The world encumbers, burdens, holds on to you and seems to overpower. It can confuse you.

This is not the place to be. You belong to God and need to abide in God to be truly fruitful. God's grace will sustain you in the world, but take every opportunity to really abide in God again. You need to be living in His kingdom filling your mind with Godly thoughts. Bible reading is a sure starting point. Take every opportunity to strengthen and enliven your faith.

"The word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And there is no creature hidden from his sight, but all things are open and laid bare to the eyes of Him with whom we have to do." Hebrews 4:12,13

God's word the Bible is God Himself, since He is Spirit. The Holy Spirit removes any worldly or Satanic spirits as I read the Bible. The Holy Spirit can get deep within me and disentangle any spirit mingling itself with mine separating it from me. The Holy Spirit leaves my soul intact and casts away any and all worldly spirits, thoughts, footholds, suggestions, psyches impinging on me. God is stronger that Satan and man's mind. Bible reading is an act of spiritual warfare.

Also it helps to fast and pray. This helps strengthen your faith, makes you really effective in prayer and at this time things are shown up in their true light, while in the past they may have been hidden. Chains are broken when you fast. You get out of jail.

It also helps you to abide in God if you have prayer helpers. "In abundance of counsellors there is victory." Proverbs 11:14. All these things combined can help you abide in God. Unless you are abiding in God you will not be fruitful of have as much victory in your faith life as when you are. Always look to God and He will provide a way in the wilderness.
